I'm trying to help someone that is looking at getting a dell notebook (her choice) and I don't know much about the current state of notebook tech.

Req's:
15" screen
Battery life (wants to use it for watching movies when away from plug)
Interent, apps, email (general usage)
Lite gaming (I don't really see her using it for games like crysis, fallout 3 etc.)

I was checking dells site and they have a few different IGPs, which would be good for battery life and ok for movies, and a few stand alone cards that I assume would be better for games.

The choices they have are:
Screen res: 1366 X 768
Intel IGP 4500MHD

Screen res: 1920X1200
Intel IGP x3100
Intel IGP 4500MHD
ATI 256MB HD3450

Screen res: 1280X800
Nvidia 256MB 8600M GT
Nvidia 128MB 8400M GS

I figuring that the IGP's would give the most battery time, but how much does it cut into that time with the available stand alone cards?

On screen res I was thinking that 1920X1200 would make any text real small, and I'm not sure if that would be worth it just to get the ATI card. Then they have the Nvidia ones with the Nvidia cards.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As far as Video goes, anything with the 3100 and up, hell even on old GMA 950 will play DVD and video files fine.
She should be able to get an extended Battery for the notebook. There's also the options bay battery, but then she couldn't watch DVD.

But, with any combination of screen/video card she should be able to watch an entire movie or 2 on one charge.

My new Toshiba l305-s5911 gets over 6 hour battery time and the standard battery (It got less time when running Vista, has Windows 7 now).

I usually don't run my notebooks off of battery power as the more you use a battery the shorter it's life span will be.

If she isn't playing 3d games, then get the notebook with the best options that don't rely on the video card and maximize her dollor on CPU, memory and HDD space.
