i currently have a dlink 624 wifi router and it resets itself often calling tech support didnt help much, i think i need to buy a new router, anyone have any suggestions? i was thinkign to go with the D-Link DGL4300 but its another dlink not sure if i should jump to it...

seeing that alot of people are recomeding the Buffalo WHR-G54S router, just want to know is this router ok with vista? does it have led indicators in the front or only in the back? also how is this with an xbox360/xbox? its gona have to handle 2 comps, xbox, xbox 360, and a few wireless laptops handhelds etc....

I have the same router and was having the same problem as you. With me the IP address was the same as my modem so they were conflicting with each other. Happens a lot with Speedstream modems. Calling in tech support is a complete crap shoot but i got lucky and the tech had me change the IP address of my router. It was kinda convoluted in the 624. After that it alsmost never dropped a connection. It did start to lock up tho. all the lights were on it it did nothing. I had to un plug it and wait a few minutes befor plugging the power back in.
I finally up graded to 4300. changing the ip adress in this one was a breeze.

So wait the router was assigning your computer the same ip adress as your cable modem?
still confused whether i should get a new router...anyone have responses to the questions i have about the buffalo router i posted above?

yeah now that you mention it, i changed the ip of the router like you said and so far it hasnt dropped connections..although it still has trouble connecting with vista or the other way around...for example this morning i spent quite some time trying to get this router to connect to this router on a vista computer and eventually i just quit...and by calling d-link tech support they said i might have to wait a few minutes for a connection...but 15-30 minutes isnt a few...

I have been having similar problem with two different wireless routers. Randomly all internet connection is lost. I have to unplug the router and then everything works fine. Now to my question, so you didn't have your internal address set to 198.162.1.1? Just wandering if this might be my problem.
I am not sure what my internal address was as I have a dynamic IP. But the IP of my router (the ip you enter to acess the router) was 192.168.0.1 and I changed it to 192.168.0.2
I did not have any problems with this router in vista. The only thing I can think of that will affect you connectivity in vista are the drivers for you NIC or on board lan.
Are you using a NIC or the on board ethernet for you mobo?
Vista is pretty good about supplying its own drivers for onboard ethernet but I don't know who makes the ethernet controlr for your asrock board.
Im not the only one with this problem there is a guy over at the extremetech forums with the same problem as mine with the same router and I've yet to find a solution other than to try a new router. There isnt another driver that I can try out since vista already installed a driver and ULI/Nvidia does not have a non-beta driver.
ok i figured out my problem...its not the router its the onboard NIC, i guess the vista drivers are that good for the onboard nic yet...hopefully someon ewill update it...who should i call for tech support with the NIC? Asrock? ULI/nvidia or MS?
Most likely it will be asrock. But you have another option. I have uesd the netgear (realtek based) and the intel NIC PCI card with vista. Vista has its own drivers for the Netgear card. Intel supplies its own drivers but it has them for all versions of vista. the intel NIC is a higher quality card, has excellent driver support and you have much more control over the device. I have both and they both work in vista. Each is about $30 at new egg.

I have teh DI-624 with the newest firmware. it's been nothing but a nightmare for me since day one.
lately I have gotten long spans of not even being able to connect to the internet via wired.
I know it's not my NIC or ethernet cables cuz when I plug the ethernet cable directly from my cable modem into the PC, everything is fine.
I had my default gateway set to 192.168.0.200, but still... perhaps I'll try another number.

What is the firmware version on the DI-624?
When the connection drops, did you check the IP?
What is the WAN select speed on it?
What is MTU? UPNP enabled? LOG said?

The firmware is the latest version 2.76, I didnt check the ip when teh concetion drops, i think its set to 10/100 speed, UPNP is enabled MTU is at default i think 2500, I dindt check the log, and I was using WEP.
I just bought a new router the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 and its been great no disconects, flashed with dd-wrt and its a real nice router.
Newest firmware.
How do you check the IP when the connection drops? You have no IP when you are not connected I would assume. But before I dropped, I would have my standard 192.168.x.x IP. And it's the same IP after I regain my connection. I tried assigning static IP's to my machines via MAC addresses too, didn't matter.
WAN is set to 10/100 Auto.
I tried UPNP and Gaming mode enabled and disabled. Logs are really unhelpful. Also due to the fact that the system clock on the router also reset when I had my disconnects, so the time would always display April 1, 2002.
I used WPA and no security, didn't make a difference with regards to the disconnects.

I have the buffalo router 54G wireless G MIMO performance somethin or other, its nice, and i also got their ethernet converter so i have full bars throughout the house, setup was as simple as hitting their AOSS button for 3 seconds and the router and ethernet converter were working together to make the best wireless internet connection within 45 seconds. This AOSS button also set up a real secure connection for me, with like a 36 character long SSID and reallly long WPA password. This is after a year and a half of nightmares with a linksys wrt54g v.5 router (even with dd-wrt). Buffalo=awesome. i sound really untechincal right now ("a reallly long password") but its probably because im so happy and too lazy to actually count how long it is.

Yeah, I have the router for 5 days so far and it hasnt dropped connection. It did slow down though but that was due to dd-wrt setting 512 ip connections as its default I raised that to 2048 (since I use bittorrent alot). The connection dropped once, I was playing a game on my Xbox360 and it said connection to Live dropped...could be an error but I didnt notice the connection drop on my PC...either way its a good router for these past 5 days...hopefully it will hold up for a few years.
