So, i'm in the market for a new printer, and my budget is somewhat limited. So i've narrowed my choices down to the Canon i350 or the Canon i560. I've seen a lot of good reviews on the 560 here, but is it worth twice as much? I do mostly text printing (versions of stuff i'm writing), but also print digital photos.

Also, I'm interested in feedback into those snazzy all-in-ones. But from what i've seen scan quality isn't that great, and it might be better to just get a printer and a scanner. However, I would like a fax machine, so I dunno. Any thoughts? Suggestions?

It also must be mac and pc compatible.

Depending on how much you print, lean toward the i560, for the separate ink tanks. If you don't print much, and little of it in color, the i350 is a solid choice too. It's not going to eat you alive on ink cost, but the "single ink" printers run a lot cheaper when color/photo printing is used regularly.

The best ones in its price range. Anandtech reviewed and compared it some time ago IIRC.

You might want to check out the Canon i850 and i860 printers. They have very good reviews and you can change the ink tanks individually. I like the fact that it uses 2 separate black ink tanks, 1 for photo and one for text.

How does the 560 stack up against the 860? Is the 860 worth the extra 50 bucks?

I`ve the new i865 model, like the i860 it has 5 seperate inks, one black cart for text ,one black cart for photo prints and the usual yellow, magneta, cyan colours.

It`s worth the extra IMHO if you print photos etc because of the extra black ink cart.

Also on my i865 it has an attachment for CDR-PR printing, which allows you to print direct to CDRs (CDR-PR) rather then print CD labels etc.

The i865 is the full featured version of the i860, with a CD tray for direct CD/DVD labelling. In the US you don't get that since your brilliant patent office has granted someone else (Seiko?) the _generic_ patent on printing directly onto CD surfaces.

oh, that's just so US-lovely. Oh, well. I think i'm gonna get the i860, it seems like a great printer for its price of $130 shipped.

Unless you're doing pictures/graphics, go with that Samsung ML-12xx or ML-14xx series. They print great quality, much cheaper than HP/Epson, and they're LASER.
