i haven't had a chance to try other brand.

I am using Creative 32x CDrom along with my Panasonic 8.4.32 CDRW.

they manufacture by the same company, Matshita.

using the same brand is better, i think.

Anyone had bad luck with the Teac and CloneCD? I would like to get one, but am worried about this issue. Any input?

Yeah, cwand, CloneCD would freeze up on my Win2K box with DMA enabled. Worked fine with no DMA, but performance suffered. Tried WinME and Win98 DMA enabled and worked with no problems. I just got an 815E motherboard so I will try it with that to see if it will work with CloneCD and DMA.

Just to throw another name in the mix, I'm very pleased with my Acer 50X. It's quiet, and reads everything. Further, with DMA enabled, I've successfully burned CD's using Easy CD Creator 4, Nero, CDClone, NTI CD Maker Pro 3 and Sony's CD Extreme.

Ive got a Creative 52x and its a great drive. Reads just about anything, very fast to installed and read...but its DAE speeds are only 8x (but it stays steady at that throughout the entire disk) the biggest problem with it is that its a freakin jet engine when it starts up...makes the cats run for cover!

Actually exar, I'll agree with you on that Sony. As much as I hate most Sony products, the 48x sony cd-rom is a very nice drive; I've used them in a bunch of systems and have had no problems. Very nice, very quiet. And you can get the 48x for $36 from mwave.com; same price as the creative, a billion times a better drive.

just don't get the kenwood drives. they suck and I finally just dumped my 72x. it works differently and more than a few companies that make games, etc. have issues with the way the drive works and have told me its up to them to fix that crap. the latest firmware didn't do anything for me either.

Never got CloneCD to work with any readers with DMA enabled. With writers yes, with readers no.

Check out this site and compare the drives. Look at speed, DAE, etc then you decide. That better than some "expert" here saying his drive is great and eveything else stinks. http://come.to/cdspeed

WOAAH there.... Palerider, before you go spend unecessary money, check out the Afreey drives. They are one of the hidden gems of the CD-Rom Drive world.

They are one of the BEST DAE extractors out there (the above URL site lists them as 4th or 5th) and they cost around $30-40 TOPS for a 50x drive.

In fact, Office Max is having a FREE after rebate deal on the Prime Peripherals 50x CD-Rom which is a rebadged Afreey. This drive rips audio at 28x for me. As good, if not better than drive twice to 3x it's price.

It is also a nice cd-rom which serves it's purposes fully and completely. I have an Afreey 50x, and went ahead an jumped on the PrimePeriphs deal cause I want another one for my mother's 'puter.

Yes, some well-known brands have solid drives, but it's not always the case that other's can't compete and even outperform. :)

Hey cwand, I tried the Teac in my new MSI 815E Pro and now CloneCD works flawlessly with DMA enabled! The rips are really fast with this drive - I'm getting about 28x average with this baby. I don't know why CloneCD didn't work with my old BX board, but others have reported this problem as well.

I've owned 4 different acers 40-50x over the years in different machines and only had one quit & got rma'd. They read everything I ever put in it from my cdrw or others.
And they're pretty cheap.
Why not get a dvd? That's what I got now, pioneer, only about twice the cdrom cost!

why spend $40-50 on a plain CDROM when you can throw in $30 more and get a Pioneer 16x/40x DVDROM it can read all my CDs even my old scratched CDRs from years pass. and you will be able to watch DVDs on it 2 i was planning to buy the teac but then saw the DVD for $70 and decided to get that. happy ever since :)

Your Creative Blaster CD-ROM wont read cd's you make? you are just using crappy CD-r's to burn with thats all. I have a creative 52x, and it reads everything I burn fine. Stop using the 5cent red/blue/green dye cd-r's. Thats the problem, not the drive.
