sure they can, but not quite as efficiently, especially when you consider the difference in entry cost. 1060 has better power draw, so maybe that compensates for the lack in compute? I dunno.

Do AMD cards sell better in 2ndary market, for this purpose? If OP hates the idea of the 1070 because of price (though it seems he is going to get one anyway), then way not grab an 480 8gb for $240, mine etherium in spare time to pay it off, then resell for ~$150 6-7 months from now when there are more options?

Or do it with a 1060 6gb. Whichever gets you a free card for this holdover period and gets a decent resell for the real upgrade (so a nice discount going in)

I guess, but why not just buy a card that delivers the performance that you want right now instead of buying a slower card that will give you a worse experience in gaming?

If I were buying today I'd look for a used 980TI.

Just my two cents.
The problem is if he holds on to the cards for this long buying a used card with no idea how well it was handled would not be a good option.

OP, I know your situation makes it hard to wait, but I'd still wait for nvidia to release the 1080ti. It's a safe bet it will be out within 3 months. A 1080 is a huge upgrade from a 780ti though, but the 1080ti will be a better bet long term than the 1080 is. 1080 is an overpriced mid range card imo.

The problem is nvidia has no reason to pump it out if they even release one for this gen as amd needs to make this happen.

The main issue is op is only using a 1080p 144hz monitor and a 1070 is already a bit overkill so going for anything more would be a waste unless he plans on going for 4k to make a 1080ti if it is released a purchase.

He said that the last thing he wanted was a 1070 at that price, so others wisely recommended a 980ti on sale used or the Nitro for $300. And I was giving another option even though I already said that 1070 makes the most sense. So, what's the issue here?

and look--now he wants a 1080. because the 1070 is too expensive. lol

Too expensive and not price according to where I feel they should be are entirely separate issues.

In short. I need a new card sooner rather than later as I'm up against a wall as far as RMA/warranty time goes. I want a new card to play with. I like fast things. I have disposable income. I don't want to wait for the RMA process to have a card. The RMA return will go to my son. No current cards move me so I'm left wondering what to do.

Frankly all this bickering back and forth among everyone is highly counter productive. It's simple. Recommend a particular model of 1070 or 1080 and state why that one. That's all. There's really nothing else on the market. Titan is insane at $1200 and 480/1060 is a side grade.

It is if you grab the windforce oc from Jet with the Shop10 promo code. You would know that if you checked your texts. ;) So what's the issue again?
Yea, seen that one, ends up being $361 with all the discounts and crap. The issue with that one is gigabyte video cards and myself have a long crummy history. Current card is a gigabyte as well. Right now its that card, an EVGA for $400 or a EVGA 1080 for $600 as the leading candidates.

In short, I just want suggestions on which make in case I missed something.

Sure there is, Fury or 980 Ti. Those two both offer best price/performance compared to 1070 / 1080.

I'm of the belief that Maxwell is going to tank like Kepler so that rules out the 980ti and the plain fury doesn't provide the jump in performance I am look for along with only 4gb vram rules it out as well. Though as I mentioned earlier I'd be more interested in a fury x or 980ti at sub $300 new which puts us back at 1070/1080.

Yea I have a 1080 ftw at the moment but while it's better than the 1070 I will be sending it back and get the latter. I was for the 1080 at one point but I feel like the extra 220 I save or a bit lower since I have to pay for a ups pickup is better spent elsewhere like on a gyms monitor which is quite expensive. I know it's said that certain iq settings tank performance on any given card But I am willing to turn down a few setting on the 1070 than 1080 since it's the less premium card and cost quite a bit less. No doubt the 1080 wins by an upwards of 20 fps in some games but others it's price is not justified. I had the zotac amp version of the 1080 and it was giving me problems so I sent back and got the ftw but I will be returning it and get a 1070. I could have gone with the discounted 980ti or fury but those cards are much less appealing when I see what the 1080 and 1070 offer at this point.

Could always get the EVGA 1070 or 1080, and if the 1080Ti is released within 90 days and you like the price and performance you can step-up to that.

So let's put aside all the advice about older GPUs and just discuss the 1070 and 1080 models.

EVGA always presents a strong entry, and their ACX 3.0 1070 and 1080 models are both very nice. If you buy EVGA, make sure to register your GPU within 15 days of purchase, or else you have to pay for the extended warranty. I have the EVGA 1080 ACX 3.0 SC and it's the best card I've owned to date, but it's totally overkill for my setup, which is 1080p. Oops.

ASUS Strix is a sexy ass card, but you pay that ASUS tax. Lately I've seen the ASUS 1070 floating around on jet.com for $395ish. Jet charges tax in NY or I'd have grabbed that, personally.

Don't count out Zotac either, both the Amp and Amp Extreme editions are excellent cards.

Ended up with the gigabyte 1070 for $356. All things considered it's a decent price. Feel kinda pedestrian about it. Really wanted something more powerful. Almost talked myself into the EVGA 1080 for $600 but meh. Plan at this point is to use the 1070 until Volta/Vega/Navi late next year and see what's available, then move the 1070 to the wife's system most likely. The 1070 will be a solid upgrade, it just doesn't get the blood flowing like it use to. Maybe I'm just getting old.

that's an excellent choice, imo, especially at that price. If you really want to upgrade next year or soon after with Vega or Volta, the 1070 should command excellent resale value. But tbh, that 1070 should keep you riding dirty for another 3-4 years before another real performance upgrade is in the works (but then with current steady price increases at that 1070 tier...who knows what that will cost then?). 1070 right now seems like the perfect $350 card and I think you nailed it, considering how difficult it is to find even at MSRP. I don't think $370 is a horrible price, but it is pretty high for that supposed midrange-to-high midrange status it is supposed to claim.

Late to the party, but only 1080 I have experience with is the EVGA GTX 1080 FTW Hybrid. I highly recommend it (I know you already bought). It's barely more than other custom 1080's and it's basically whisper quiet.

Enjoy your 1070. GF is gonna get my 1080 when I upgraded to whatever is out next year. You're also getting old. But that isn't a bad thing.
