Im building a system for a friend. He currently has a 8Mb crappy video card. Im building him a 1600 XP system, and after i put in everything he wants i have about $130 for a video card. He wants to play the new Nascar game when it comes out pluss a few others. What do you think are my best choices for a new card? Im currently thinking about getting the Asus V7700 32mb GForce 2 TI pure agp card any suggestions? and is this a good card?

Yeah its a good card, however I think sever other manufacturers make a 64 MB Ti card that's as cheap if not cheaper than the Asus 32 MB one. I'd definately recommend either a GF2 Ti (prefferably 64 MB) or a GF3 Ti200 if he wants to spend a bit more (a current check on pricewatch shows the GF3 TI200 at around $150-160).

GF3 ti200 if he spend 10 more.
visiontek GF2 GTS-V for 5x.
i wouldn't consider any gf2 ti/pro/ultra at the moment.

Get the Gainward GF3 Ti200 Golden Sample. It should be in the $150 range from newegg. These cards are the best overclockers out there. Stock speed is 175core/400mem. Most people are running at 220-240core / 520-560mem with no problems. I'm running very stable at 535core/535mem. Great card.

Check the hot deals forum. You will find some good deals on GF3 Ti200's. You can get one for $130 or less. I wouldn't get a GF2.

You still have one more day to order the visiontek GF3 and get the $50 rebate. (expires 2/28)

Check the hot deals forum for the Gateway deal that brings the total for the card down to <$90.

Can't beat that.

Or you could score a retail Radeon 8500 (lotsa great features, and pretty much guaranteed SHARP 2d) for a few bucks more. I'd cut grass, shovel snow, whatever, if I really needed the extra goodies. Check the AT Hot Deals forum for sure, and always use Amex Blue to get some $ back later when the price drops.

GF3 ti200 definately... its the best bang for $130.

or you can scrunge around another $30 and buy a radeon 8500 :D I'd much rather have that than the ti200 for a mere $30 more... :)

E3Art-- mwave has had the retail 8500 for $161 for several days now. You'll have to add shipping and taxes if necessary... I bought mine there (always had good experiences with mwave) like 2 weeks before these radical price drops, for like $239. I used Amex Blue, and expect to get at lease $80 back now.

It seemed to me that the 8500 benches closer to the GF3 ti500 than the 200, and has loads of great features, and impeccable 2D quality. Still does. But I have no doubt that there are MANY GF3 Ti 200 owners that have grins tatooed on their faces, too.

I still think the 8500 has more potential, tho. But I'm not complaining about the performance I get right now.

mwave was real good for me. 161+shipping = 169 for me. i would get a geforce 3 ti200 BUT i liked radeon a bit better.... because i'm just thinking ti200 would be outclassed soon, and 8500 is almost the equivilant of geforce 3 ti500 (except for driver probs of course). read the benchmark results at anandtech.... they have it archived in the "video" section.

just got the Gainward Golden Sample Ti200 64MB refurb from Newegg, waited 1 month for it (someone always get it like 10 sec before I did for a few weeks! ) Running @ 260/560 stable, best $119 I've ever spend :)

GF 2 TI's and GF3 Ti-200 are all crap. The GF4 Ti-200 is a big marketing sceme, "oh look GF4 came out!, i gotta get that, it's much better than a GF3!"...my ass buddy's...think again, compare the statistics. Why do you think Nvidia does not offer you to compare your graphic card to a Ti-200? I have a GF3 and a GF3 Ti-500 is only 7% better than mine...its not even worth the extra 50 bucks. If I were you i would spend my money on something that is quality like a gf3, and not something that is popular by name.

I have to reiterate that if you're going to get a GF3 Ti200 then go with Gainward GS. They overclock to Ti500 levels because of the 3.8ns DDR. They advertise it as 4ns DDR but if you take the heat sinks off you'll actually find 3.8. Some of the Ti200 cards out there use 4.5ns DDR so watch out.

GF3 Ti200 all the way. They're dropping in price every day- I keep seeing prices around 100 dollars after rebate
