I am having a networking nightmare here and I hope that someone can help me. I have read some guides on line that tell me what I am attempting to do is very straight forward and simple but I cannot seem to get it working.

Here is the scenerio:

* Computer # 1 running Windows XP Pro. I can see the shared files and folders on computer #2 (running Win 2K Pro) but I cannot access any of the files on that machine. I can see everything but when I attempt to access the files the Win XP machine locks up...what gives?

I think that I have the IP addresses and the subnet masks configured correctly but I cannot seem to make this work! Any help would be appreciated!

Yes make sure there is an account on the win2k machine setup so that the xp machine can get into it.

I remember having this kind of problem before when I was setting up a network between a win2k machine and xp machine.

What ip addresses are you using?

as suggested above: make user both computer have same user_name/password account & that user_name is in the share directory taht you want to access.

OK... I am a networking newbie! I am going to offer up all of the information that I know of. If I am missing something please tell me what I am missing and I will attempt to hunt it down for you.

Server Computer Hardware.
OS - Windows 2K Pro
NIC - Lyksys 10/100 PCI

Server Computer Settings.
Workgroup - MSHOME
IP Address - 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask - 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway - 192.168.1.2

Prefered DNS Server - ?
Alternate DNS Server - ?

Both computers are visible via the "COMPUTERS NEAR ME". I can pull some files from my desktop to my server and I can print from the server to the printer that is connected to my desktop.

Client Computer Hardware.
OS - Windows XP Professional
NIC - built in SIS NIC on Asus P4S533 mobo

Client Computer Settings.
Workgroup - MSHOME
IP Address - 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask - 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway - 192.168.1.2

Prefered DNS Server - ?
Alternate DNS Server - ?

I can see all shared items on the server from the "VIEW WORKGROP COMPUTERS". I can even open the server icon. However, this is where my problem comes from, when I attempt to open a shared item the desktop locks up and I must reboot.

I hope that this helps somewhat. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. I want to add 3 more computers to this network but I want to get this 2 computer set up running before I introduce more variables...

That should work. For a more detailed explanation of exactly what lowtech said, go to here. I'm pretty sure that should work even though it's not for WinXP.

If you are using ICS on your 2000 Server, then the gateway settings are correct. If however, you are just networking devices together, I would not have these gateway settings on either PC (though they will be in the local routing tables of hosts).

ICS is not recommended on servers, so if you are using DNS and Active Directory on your 2000 Server, remove ICS and you will have no problems. IF you want Internet access for your local LAN to go through your 2000 Server, use NAT with RRAS, not ICS. Yes, NAT is more complex to setup, but it is recommended by MS, not ICS.

If the user authentication for share permissions is set to Authenticated User, you should be able to get in provided that on your Security tab, the appropriate user (or the users group) for the XP PC is already defined and as a member of a group (like Administrators, Power Users, or Users), the appropriate group is added for access to the PC. The Security tab is for local authentication and control of local resources, and the Shares is for network acces and control. But by removing or modifying either the Everyone group from either Shares or Security this affects the child objects in the folder/directory and so makes other changes necessary for network access.

If XP is not properly updating from a stand alone server, your XP PC has more restrictive security settings or your XP PC is not a member of the domain and both PC's are in a workgroup. If the 2000 Server is not allowing the XP PC access, it has more restrictive settings. For example, you might be allowing Everyone or any other group to browse the directory (list folder contents in Security tab), but not allowing these capabilities on the directory share having problems.

Last, if XP is still locking up, edit the lmhosts, hosts, and network file to include the name of the domain/workgroup and PC names with their respective IP addresses.
