My daughter is really bugging us for an Ipod. Personally I don't know much about the different brands, but I understand Ipod usually carries a price premium just for the name.

So what is a good player to get? She wants a Nano because of the small, thin size and it comes in different colors (she really wants a pink one). I could care less what brand it is as long as it plays music. She's not getting a video player, just the basic MP3 player.

Also, di you have to get music from certain sites for certain players (such as itunes for an Ipod)?

The iPod is very competitive and doesn?t carry any kind of premium for the ?iPod or Apple? name. If it?s more expensive then most other players it?s because it?s better then most other players; and it is.

The iPod will play any regular MP3 or AAC file but won?t play WMA since that is MS format.

Ok, so a music file that is .mp3 should work on any brand MP3 player, correct?

Yes, I own an iPod video 60gb (a bit larger than the nano). I love it, but if she wants something small, go with the nano, it does not get much smaller than that and still maintains the storage space. If I had to do it all over again, I would have went with a Toshiba MP3 player to save some money, as I find that I do not use the video features as much as I thought I would.

IMO ipods are overrated.
tried one and the sound quality is average although the interface is a plus.
if they're listening on stock headphones go with ipod but if they use better quality ones probably better go for one with higher quality.

I'm using a Sony HD5 and i've never heard an mp3 player with higher quality.
The bundled sonicstage software is pretty bad but there is a nice drag n drop replacement available.

I don't think she's too worried about the sound quality. I just would like to get a decent one at a good price. Definitely don't need anything top of the line.

I bought a creative zen xtra 40 gig for 170 a year back, awosome mp3 player, it might not look a pretty as a ipod and it is build like a brick, but you buy a mp3 to use, not to show off or look pretty

? It's a digital music player. You're only limited only by the quality of the music file and how good your headphones are.

Wrong. The D/A converters in the player are very important indeed. And Kelnoen is right.

I have a Creative MuVo MX. A decent, cheap and sturdy player. Recommended.

Any wisdom on the SanDisk c250? Flash slot good, no AAC bad (but not a deal breaker). How is the quality?

Still huge though. These toy video players are as big as the original Rio's from last millennium. I prefer a small music-only player at least until all functionality (telephone/video/music/intarweb/whatever) can be integrated into one device sans any drawbacks over discrete devices.

I am really digging the Samsung yp-t9.

I used to have the yp-t8 but gave it to my gf after she murdered her muvi tx.

Ipod's are over rated.

Get a Sansa e250, plays videos, mp3's, has a microSD slot so that you can upgrade it later.

And if the other kids laugh cuz she doesn't have an ipod, tell her she's making a stronger statement by getting something better, not settling for what everyone else has

Creative makes some decent nano technology players that, IMO, have better features than ipods, like a REAL eq, FM, recording capabilities. The interface is not as easy as the ipod (which, imo, is the only good thing about ipods). And they are much more durable than ANY ipod. I got one for my son who destroys basically everything but he has yet to break the creative mp3 player. :) I for get the exact model name but it does use nano technology. Creative nano perhaps? I forget. Its pretty tiny also. I dont hate ipods, I have a 3rd gen 10 gigger and a 4th gen 40 gigger, but for more serious music and video recording and viewing I use the Archos 100gb AVR500 (definately NOT for kids) :)

LOL - Did you even look at it? It a little thicker than the nano, and smaller than the palm of your hand (Around the size of a Zen Micro)
