If you remember i only have 1 gig of Patriot Extreme
Performance 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual
Channel Kit Desktop Memory, what ram would be good for my computer at
the moment if i want 3 gigs of ram? do i have to get the same model?
and what is important that matters like do i have to get PC 3200 ram
only? or SRAM only?

No you do not have to get the same brand of ram or model. however, if the cas latency's on this chips are 2 or 2.5 and you buy some 3.0 the motherboard will effectively make them all 3.0... on another note there is no proven performance beyond 2Gb of ram and if you buy another 2 sticks of 512 to fill up all four slots available you will have to run it at a 2T or your system will become unstable ........ the fact that you are using DDR means you are using old technology (i do too, so don't get mad) DDR-2 is much cheaper and now DDR-3 is already here. however this means a new system build which will cost you more money.

So what i recommend is that you do the upgrade and stick with Patriot (there are a good company) and be happy for another year or two with that upgrade but eventually you will have to do a new build or buy a new machine. on another note stick with XP rather than going with the resource hog we know as Vista.

Actually, the above post was PROBABLY based on windows XP, I KNOW Vista can use more than 2GB, sitting here with firefox and fraps only running, I am using 34% or 4GB, about 1400MB of RAM.

Get another 2x 512mb or sell your current sticks and buy 2x 1gb

By the time Vista mature you'll upgrade

I'm using 2 x 512 of DDR 400 RAM as well and am contemplating updating so I'll have 4 x 512 RAM. What does "have to run it at a 2T" mean?
