Need more laptop Ram

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-7Y2L

I installed CPUZ and noticed my ram is DDR2 266MHz CL 4, 1 stick, size 1024mb

I would like somewhere around 3GB, but will be fine with at least 2gb.

Any idea on how much ram I can stick in this laptop?

I just installed Win 7 and noticed it's running a tad slow, so I think it will do better with some more ram.

Its not "running low", Win7 has much better memory management then Win XP. It is simply utilizing that memory for something, like visual effects or file caching. If you kicked off a process and it needed memory, it would drop anything unnecessary to get it, and provide the application with what it needs.

However, memory is still always nice to have, and my guess, based on the age of the machine is the max on that guy is 2GB.

All of the memory finders I have tried, ()Kingston, Crucial) state that the PCG-7Y2L model has been discontinued, and it is not listed. What does your manual say? It should specify what memory to use.

From a google search of the model, it seems to suggest PC2-4200 DDR2 RAM.

Download CPU-Z and see what kind of RAM is currently installed. I don't know what the maximum you can install is though.

You can always just upgrade it to 2GB (add 1 more stick of DDR2 PC2-4200) to be on the safe side.

Assuming your laptop has 2 ram slots (1 occupied, 1 empty);

CPUZ says "DDR2 266MHz" - which wouldn't be PC2-4200, right?

CPU-Z halves the RAM frequency when you have DDR2. I forget the technical reason why there is the difference.

So when CPU-Z says 266MHz, it translates to 533MHz (PC2-4200).

If you have the latest version of CPU-z, check the "SPD" tab. It should give you the details on your RAM module.
