Need more enforcement on P&N

I'm a big fan of debate, and feel that the discourse in P&N is the stuff that democracy is made of. On the main menu page, it says post must be kept on topic and that "PERSONAL FLAMES WILL NOT BE TOLERATED." The problem of personal attacks has grown so sever there as to pretty much shut down any real debate or analysis. I, for one, would like to see much more enforcement there.

I've not seen many personal attacks. I have seen people accuse others, but they are confusing "personal attack" with "personal disagreement"

There is a difference between "You're an idiot!" and "Your opinion is idiotic!"

I have seen much of the latter and very little of the former.

Some people come to anandtech to buy products ;) and engage in reasonable debate.

Whose money is worth more, daveshel?

Perhaps, if you are really offended, you should just close your eyes. :p

Since a good deal of the revenue at AT comes from advertisers, and since they pay by the number of hits, those who participate more generate more revenues for AT. Not sure what your point was there, but my money is worth just as much as anybody's.

And the America - Love It Or Leave It analysis is repugnant to the principles on which our country was founded. Again, I can't really tell what point you're trying to make, but, no, I won't close my eyes when I can use my voice to address an issue that needs addressing.

No matter what topic you bring up in P&N, it all ends up the same....

poster 1 "I disagree"
poster 2 "You are stupid"
poster 1 "I hate you"
poster 2 "I hate you, too"

It gets old quickly.

Here is one :

Blatant personal attack

Look at the second response in that thread from a member replying and making a personal attack by changing a part of the user name to a derogatory nature.

Now, I understand that the member who started this thread is not well liked in P&N, but I believe that if you don't like a certain member then don't reply to the threads they start or if you choose to reply make your counter point but be civil about it. There is no room for put downs and personal attacks on this forum in my opinion.

I think some sort of action needs to be taken to reduce the number of flamebait threads. A lot of the name calling and other nonsense can often be traced to thread originators who are clearly looking to piss people off, and you can see the degeneration follow as people respond in kind. For example, why can't people just post well-thought out commentaries or even just a "thought you might like to know" when they post articles, instead of adding annoying potshots, snide sarcasm, or "NYAH NYAH I TOLD YOU SO!" The latter remarks tend to distract from any real issues at hand, often preventing worthwhile debate.

Here is one recent example, which isn't as outright horrible as some of the threads posted, but nonetheless flamebait, as the OP even outright says that he posted it just to piss people off. It seems pretty clear that he isn't trying to provide helpful information or engage in constructive debate, he's just looking for a fight. I wish threads like those would be discouraged.

I posted a topic in p/n basicly asking what the deal was with that and with people quoting each other till the entire thread was jut quotes and one line insults at the bottom, page after page.
well i got yelled at, and one of the mods even pm'd me regarding my poor spelling and puctuation.
weeel its safe to say my voice is silenced. IMHO thats what half the people in p/n come there for, to hear others insult each other and then throw in their bit.

Ooops i did it again.

Sorry mods i hope my punctuation and spelling are at least ok this time.
