If anyone has some advice or insight on this I would be extremly grateful and I will be your new best friend, anyways.. as some of ya may know I was able to get into UCD and outta my crapville town called Reno and everything seems to be going great. Except one little thing, it seems that I will be in debt for the next 8 years or so of my life. Just got my financial aid packet from UCD and while it is pretty good (I think.) one thing really really really screws me over. The out of state fee of 11,000 ish. Now originally I was expecting to pay this and earn residency the following years and thus not pay it my soph, junior and senior year except I ran into a little problem.
In their catalog it says:
Who is a Resident?
If you are an adult student (at least 18 years of age) you may establish residence for tuition purposes in California if: (1) you are a U.S. citizen; (2) you are a permanent resident or other immigrant; or (3) you are a nonimmigrant who is not precluded from establishing a domicile in the U.S. Nonimmigrants who are not precluded from establishing a domicile in the U.S. include those who hold visas of the following types: A, E, G, H-1, H-4, I, K, L, N, NATO, O-1, O-3, R, TN, or TD. To establish residence you must be physically present in California for more than one year and you must have come here with the intent to make California your home as opposed to coming to this state to go to school. Physical presence within the state solely for educational purposes does not constitute the establishment of California residence, regardless of the length of your stay. You must demonstrate your intention to make California your home by severing your residential ties with your former state of residence and establishing those ties with California. Evidence of intent must be dated one year before the term for which you seek resident classification. If these steps are delayed, the one-year durational period will be extended until you have demonstrated both presence and intent for one full year. Effective Fall 1993, if your parents are not residents of California or you were not previously enrolled as a UC student, you will be required to be financially independent in order to be a resident for tuition purposes. Your residence cannot be derived from your spouse or your parents.
Now that bold statement really screws me over since....
Requirement for Financial Independence
You will be considered "financially independent" if one or more of the following applies: (1) you are at least 24 years of age by December 31 of the calendar year for which you are requesting residence classification; (2) you are a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces; (3) you are a ward of the court or both parents are deceased; (4) you have legal dependents other than a spouse; (5) you are married, or a graduate student or a professional student, and you were not claimed as an income tax deduction by your parents or any other individual for the tax year immediately preceding the term for which you are requesting resident classification; or (6) you are a single undergraduate student and you were not claimed as an income tax deduction by your parents or any other individual for the two tax years immediately preceding the term for which you are requesting resident classification, and you can demonstrate self-sufficiency for those years and the current year. (Note: Financial independence will not be a factor in residence status for graduate student instructors, graduate student teaching assistants, research assistants, junior specialists, post-graduate researchers, graduate student researchers, and teaching associates who are employed 49% or more of full time or who have funding equivalent to employment that is 49% or more of full time for the term for which classification is sought.)
Thus I have to pay $11K extra a year since I am out of state and financial aid does not cover this fee, which means I am going to be in debt plus if I go to med school after college which I plan on, I'll be even more in debt. Does anyone know any way around the financial independent requirement or am I just screwed?
And heres my financial aid packet, should I take all the loans?
Federal Direct Loan Sub-NH 1,700 567 567 566 Offered
Federal Pell Grant Program-NH 1,250 417 416 417 Accepted
Federal Perkins Loan-NH 2,100 700 700 700 Offered
University Grant-NH 6,516 2,172 2,172 2,172 Accepted
Total Aid $11,566 $ 3,856 $ 3,855 $ 3,855
Numbers are: total, fall, winter and spring.
Also one little minor thing, I believe all UC campuses forbid freshmen who live on campus to have parking permit and since I am from Reno I would like to be able to drive home maybe once a month or so to check up on friends and family, is there anyway to get around this?
Thanks again for everyones help
