Need Monitor

I use my 60" plasma to play FPS' but I have to set the resolution low so I can read text. I sit about 12' from it and use wireless KB and mouse. To often, I get killed before I even see the person.

I want to add a 24" monitor to game on and use a corded KB and mouse.
What type of panel should I get for gaming? Refresh rate?

i7 3770
GTX 660 ti
16 GB RAM
Win8

Would upgrading the video card make a difference?

No budget in mind for the monitor but I'd probably stay under $500.

There are several factors that would help out your situation but we'll need a bit more information to help you determine.

1. How do you connect to the internet? Ethernet cable or wireless? Recommend by cable to reduce latency.

2. TN panels are plentiful and have 1 to 2ms response times. This can help but when coupled with 120hz+ refresh rate monitor they are said to have 'CRT like' fluidity. I say 'said' because I do not currently own one. Most of the faster monitors are TN and are fine but if you were looking for more color accuracy I would go with Eizo but thats a bit out of your above mentioned price range.

Asus 24" $270 (TN, 1ms, 144hz)

BenQ 27" $489 (TN, 1ms, 120Hz)

Eizo 23.5" $620 (VA, 1ms, 240hz)

3. If you decide to choose a 'gaming monitor' with 120hz or better refresh rate bare in mind that to truly get your experience worth you'll need your graphics card to push 120+ frames per second. That calls into question which games you play, at what resolution, and your current FPS at that resolution.

I have 25MB cable and I play on a wired connection.
I am not sure what resolution I'd play at. Likely the highest resolution I could use and still read text. Right now on my plasma I am using 1024X768. Any higher and I can't read text. I am assuming that if I am sitting 1-2 feet from a 24" monitor it will be easier to read text at a higher resolution.
I mostly play COD4, online.

The monitor would just be for gaming. Email, browsing, etc. would be on the plasma.

That 660Ti seems to handle COD4 just fine from what I've read so far. I see no reason why either one of these two wouldn't do you justice.

Been running a console command that shows FPS. It shows 60 fps no matter my settings. Everything on high, AA all the way up or off.

I have the BenQ Gaming XL2720T that oldsmoboat linked to, and it's a great monitor.

27 inches, 1ms refresh rate, and it's a crisp color. I got it when it was $549, but now it's under $500, so it fits your needs well. Hope you find your monitor

I recommend:

1/ A Korean QNIX 2510 Evolution II 2560x1440 res PLS Matte Display for Approx $300
2/ Monoprice 24AWG Dual Link DVI-D Cable for Approx $30
3/ An AMD R9 290 or 290X for Approx between $450 to $600 or a used 290X for $400 off eBay.
4/ You'll need at least an 800W PSU if you intend to OC but you should do fine with a $114 XFX 750W Pro BEFX or $139 850W Pro BEFX with a single Card as you have a None K Processor.

With a little tweaking and known hacks you can run that particular display between 96 to 120Hz's

I'm very pleased with my QNIX 2510 Evo II PLS display behind X-Fire 290X and I7 2700K @ 4.8G - I'm under water and run the XFX 1050W Pro BEFX PSU. I'm considering of buying 2 more QX2510 Evo II's for a 4320x2560 Res 3 Panel Display - Yah I'm Sick - LOL

NOTE: Your GTX 660 ti will run that resolution for Video but fall short for Gaming.
