Need modem buying advice

I just built my new computer but find I now need a modem just in case my DSL line goes down. Can anyone suggest a good deal on an internal PCI modem? USR modems are the standard but expensive. Creative modems seem to have issues with WinXP Pro which is what I am using. Looking for a bang for the buck v.92 modem. Thanks for any suggestions fellas you've helped me in the past. This site is great.

I was told to get a modem with an Intel chipset but don't know what modems have them.

If you use the modem only for web surfing and such, then I'd say just go for a Winmodem. If you plan on using it for gaming then I'd say go for a Zoom or a USR.

Zoom rocks. I've got an old external model (says k56Flex on it but has been flashed to v90). This is an amazing modem. Doesn't even disconnect when my clueless wife picks up the extension and dials a number. 😀

Well normally I'd suggest a USR OEM model like the 2977 or 2976 but if you're only gonna use it once in a blue moon for email and light browsing whiel DSL is out then I'd say just get a good WinModem.

winmodems are the devil.
spend a few extra bucks and just get a normal modem, also you can probably save some cash by getting a v90 modem instead of v92...

My thoughts exactly. Any of the Agere/Lucent based software modems would be perfect. You can find them for under $10 on Net and they are very reliable under WinXP in my experience.

I happen to have two USR v2977's (hardware PCI). They actually perform a bit slower than either of my software-based Agere v.92 and Intel 536EP v.92 modems. Software modems have come a long way. Considering you only plan on using it sparingly, it doesn't make sense t spend the extra bucks when you don't have to.

I would normally agree with you completely but he's just looking for amodem to temporarily suplement his DSL connection, so almost anything "should" do (WinModem or HW Modem).

For less than $20, the Aopen FMPM 56k V.92 modem is awesome. They work extremely well...best modem for money Ive ever had luck with no questions asked.

see thats what i figure, just buy a cheapola normal modem and you should be fine really. I mean in this cause a winmodem would be fine, but what if you ever need a decent modem some time in the future?
