Need mobo for Athlon XP

I am going to be picking up the Athlon XP 1600 today, and I'm wondering which mobo I should get. I have been doing a lot of research on both the Shuttle AK31a and ECS K7S5A. I was first told that the ECS K7S5A had some problems, and overall, people recommend the Shuttle AK31a over the ECS K7S5A anyways. So I was set on the Shuttle until I read mix reviews by www.hardocp.com's review on the AK31a. I was a bit disappointed myself, and now I am stuck not knowing which board I should get. I am looking for a budget board, and stability is absolutely necessary. Do you guys think I should get the Shuttle? Or is there something on the horizon that will blow away these two boards? Please let me know.. thanks!

I would go ECs and here is my .02 cents on why:

1.It is cheap... at only 52-57$ you can afford to replace in a couple of months if a board with great new features comes out
2. I like its stability... I think if you read the reviews youll see it is very stable. most of the negative comments here are from people who are having trouble building their first system
3. new boards with better chipsets and features will be here in 6 mohts or less
4. it has alot of great features like onbaord lan and sound (which you can disable if you dont like)

I think the ECS is the financially smart choice. No baord currently out . outperforms it ENOUGH to justify increased cost

that said.. good luck!

They are a little old fashioned these days, but I would go with an AMD761 board.

The Sis735 looks nice, but the ECS is started to get some negative feedback...reminds me of the K7TPro2...for the first 4 months it was around, it was the cat's meow, anyone that chose any other board was an idiot. But ask around now, and I think you'll find many people with problems with it. Same with the ECS K7S5A.

The nForce would be my next choice, but not really being available yet...

Therefore the Via KT266A would be my next choice, and while it does outperform the AMD761, the Jury is still out on how stable it will turn out, where as the AMD761s are pretty tried, tested and true at this point. My personal AMD761 has crashed only a single time, and that was my fault becuase I was doing stupid things to my drivers. When I was not fiddling with my Device Drivers, I have not had a single crash.

I would stick to an AMD761 board, old fashioned true, but tried and tested. You know what you are getting when you buy a good AMD761 board.

Maybe I'm gettin' old already, but I would rather buy something tested and true and let someone else try the new stuff. I've seen to many times where what is the best today is the worst tommorow.

Well, it is going to be convenient for me to stick with the ECS, since I am going to buy the bundled ECS + Athlon XP combo at Fry's. I was going to sell the ECS to buy something else, but this is a bargain of a deal already, so I wouldn't mind upgrading to a KT266a or nForce later for a bit more to get a complete stable system. I can't wait to try the speed of the SiS735 though, I have heard some rave reviews about it. Thanks for the suggestion though, Noriaki. BTW, I though this was funny as hell.....

when i bought my 1.33 athlon i bought the Asus A7M266. I dont know whether they still sell them or not but i've had no problems to date (extremely stable) with mine and i know that they support palaminos. Asus is the way to go in my opinion.

lol my Sig you mean?

Hey, it ain't mine, Wingznut said it 😉

Well good luck with the ECS, for the price it's tough to beat, and a lot of people have been very happy with it, but I've been hearing quite a few problems with it to.

Mind you, I rather forgot about the 686B issue on the AMD761 boards....I've never had that problem with mine, but the 686B could be a problem to.

Maybe you should just stick to the ECS and keep it until you can give KT266A or NForce a whirl.

I would go with a mobo that uses the KT266A chipset runs much faster then the AMD 761 chipset. I have built several using the Epox 8KHA+ mobo and they are VERY stable
