I need a system and low power is the key. At least lower than this Northwood P4 is running. I have a budget of $500. The comp doesn't need much power. Enough to run Fedora and a download manager. This computer does not need a monitor or a harddrive. Integrated video is fine (unless a cheaper board and a dedicated card would cost less). A DVD/CDROM drive will be fine. It does not need to burn anything. You guys think you can handle it? lol

There isn't any this week, but usually there are 500 buck computers floating around every couple of weeks. Sometimes, the deal is very hot, sometimes not so. I'm sur eyou'll be able to find a 400 or so laptop before tax/shipping in 2 weeks :)

I have a spare HDD and monitor that I can put into the computer. I just couldn't personally configure one sub-$500 and thought maybe you guys could. (No monitor, no HDD, no special video)

No specific recommendations.. but I'm fairly certain you can pull it off buying from FS/FT :)

How low power? >=D

I would build something around a Via C3, they really good for low power, and they are extremely cheap!

You can get a FlexATX motherboard with CPU for $55, or a refurbished one for $33 if you are feeling luckey.

I would just stick in some ram and other spare parts then put it in a milk crate, and you have an uber-cheap decent downloaing computer :)

This might not fit your needs though, 1 gHz C3 might be a bit too slow....

lowest power possible (within $500). If a 1Ghz VIA can work with Fedora then I'd be happy with that. I wont hardly be on it. Oh, it might need enough power to run Ultra VNC. Does anyone know the minimum specs to run that program?

You could try a SFF powered by a C3 processor. Doesn't go much lower in power than that . . .

I just built one for a friend for around 475. Was a sep 3000+ 754 on a cheep mobo with some cheep 1gb of ram. Had a $35 dvd burner, 17 inch crt, floppy and a 40 GB HD. Since you dont have to buy the HD or Monitor then you could upgrade other components.

Mini-ITX and maybe the tiniest PSU you can find. Seasonic and Fortron/FSP usually have good efficiency, at least in the reviews I've seen, though if you get a mini-ITX case, it'll likely come with a power supply, and won't take a standard ATX. In that case, the power supply would be about as big as the case anyway.

A 1GHz C3 should be able to run Fedora Core fine. I would not want to try running windows on it though.

It won't run UltraVNC though, because that is Windows only :). RealVNC or TightVNC would work though.

I have run VNC on a Zaurus (A Linux PDA with a 416MHz CPU) so VNC can't take that much processing power..

Not hard to do - this comes in under $300. shipped - and you'll be surprised how quick it will be. All it lacks is a keyboard and mouse.
. You will need to have a User Account at newegg to log in and see it. It's in the Shared Wish Lists under "Budget System" . Or you can PM me your email address and I'll email the wish list to you.

Could try slapping together a duron machine. If you want a little more bang get a sempron. They run cool and wont draw as much power as the AXPs or A64s.

Sempron with cool and quiet- 60 bucks
SOcket 754 mobo probably via with via integrated video -60 bucks
256 MB of ram- 20 bucks(yes you don't need 512 like everyone else says)
Cheap case at compusa or any other store (30 bucks)
1 Case fan (3 bucks)
CD-DVD rom-20 bucks

Total=60+60+20+30+3+20= 220 dollars

Celeron-M (Dothan based with 1MB L2 cache) Laptop is probably the best bet.
