Need Legal Advice about possible website "problem"

I was emailed a couple days ago by a user from my website's forums telling me to remove personal information that was posted about him in a thread several months ago. This information was posted by another user because he was found to be a verified troller. I replied saying that we are not responsible for other members' information posting and that he should take it up with them. The reply was a bit less cordial threatening legal action. This is a very recent development and I'm getting a lot of feedback from my sources, but I was wondering what you guys think?

ask him to quote the basis of his request

let him point you to an applicable law/whatever that says you should comply

it's probably just fluff... but I do know that i've found some personal info on someone before -- and visited the site later only to see that it was removed. so maybe there is a law/whatever -- but I sure don't know what it is.

What kind of personal information are we talking about? Addresses and phone numbers? I would think THAT would be reasonable to be asked to be removed. But I'm almost certain that even the AT mods have posted names and city/states of banned trollers before....but I might be remembering things incorrectly. Any back me up on this?

The personal information does include full name and mailing address. The thing is, he's a confirmed troller and this same information is posted on Trollhunters (I'll have to double check when I get home).

If it is on trollhunters you shouldn't have a problem. Is it that guy that posted in forum issues? He said he was going to sue anandtech as well.

personally I would remove the personal information BUT link to trollhunters where it's posted... that way you've got your bases covered

The law is not there to protect the guilty. If the guy's a scammer, no judge ANYWHERE will go along with his request - that is, if his request has any legal basis whatsoever, which chances are, it doesn't. EVERYONE cries lawsuit these days.

Yea I may just do that. I just checked and found out that he is in fact listed on TrollHunters. On the one hand, I would like to be legal and avoid any headache (he claimed he would contact his company lawyer if I didn't remove the information), but on the other hand backing down is not the answer to trolls. Therein lies the dilemma. I'm also curious as to how far I can take this before there's a point of no return.

I think just listing his user name with a link to troll hunters with his info is good middle ground.

Here's another point though: I wasn't the one who posted this information. It was posted by another user who has full access to removing that information. Why am I being contacted? Aside from maybe that user refusing to remove it.

Post the info here and then send a link to the guy and let Anand deal with it. He probably has more money. 😀

Edit
Is this the guy?
