Need IP address help.

This is pretty convoluted. Please bear with me...

Our company has a server running Windows 2000 Server. We have DSL and up until now we have had a dynamic IP address. The IP address of the server is 192.168.0.200. The dynamic IP address is currently 204.221.204.199. The first IP address is of course the address assigned to the computer by the network administrator. The dynamic IP address is the address assigned by the DSL provider. This is going to sound like a stupid question, but what terms do you use to describe these IP addresses? Is the first a "network IP address" and the second an "internet IP address"?

I have a VPN connection setup from a remote computer into this server. The VPN connection requires that I enter the IP address of the computer I am trying to access (this is the dynamic internet IP address, not the network IP address). I have this working properly.

It is my understanding that the dynamic IP address can change at any time screwing up my VPN connection so I requested a static IP address from the DSL provider. They have now provided me with a static IP address.

First off, as soon as they provided a static IP address, I can no longer connect to the internet. Do I need to enter the static IP address on the server, replacing the 192.168.0.200 with the static IP address? If I don't enter it here, then where do I enter it? Actually, it makes no sense to me that I would have to enter it anywhere. The dynamic IP address is not entered anywhere, so why would I have to enter the static IP address? Is it just coincidence that I lost the internet connection when they assigned the static address?

The static IP address they assigned is 69.46.197.131. When I ping this address from another computer I get no response.

It would be helpful to know how many physical NIC's you have in the server.

You obviously have one NIC (internal) that is statically assigned the internal IP (192.168....)

Is there a second NIC for the external IP address or is it an ADSL type connection where a virtual NIC is created and it recieves the IP?

There is only one NIC in the server. The server is connected to a router though (4 other computers on the network, all with internet access). That brings up a good point though... Maybe it is the router that needs to be reconfigured with the static IP address?

yes you're right. it sounds like your router needs to be configured to connect w/static ip instead of dynamic. depending on your router, there a various ways to do so. check the router manual or have your isp tell you, or drop another message here with your router model, someone'll know.

Thanks for the help. Should my internet provider also be able to provide me with a WAN gateway and subnet mask? The internet seems to work without providing these, but I am unable to connect to the network with my VPN connection. I cannot ping my static IP address outside of the LAN. Shouldn't I be able to do this from any computer connected to the internet?

you should be able to ping your static IP from anywhere. It will ping the router.

To connect to your network via VPN, you will probably have to open some ports on the router and point to the server on your internal network. Did you have ever access your network via VPN, prior to getting this static IP ?? You said "I have this working properly", but I'm not sure if you meant just the setup, or if you have been using it.

many lower end nat router does now allow vpn passthough, or if it does, normally only for one VPN connection.
