Recently found myself without job, and while I am looking for another one, rent will be due soon. Does anyone here have any ideas what the guidelines to qualify are, and what the process is to apply for unemployment?

Were you laid off or fired from your last job? Why did you get fired or let go?

If you just quit then no you can;t get unemployment.

To file for it, if you qualify, go to the employment commison and that is where you will fill out the forms and get started. But it takes a little while before you see the first check. So if you need money in the next couple weeks you are to late. These things take time, so I hope you did not think you could juts walk in sign something and get money?

I got fired, first time ever. Sucks big time because it was partly a misunderstanding. Not sure what to do now when I fill out applications, I've never not left a company in good standing

filing for unemployment was easy in MI. It took about 30 minutes online, and i just have to call MARVIN once every two weeks.

Well, in any case get to your unemployment department on Monday and discuss it with them.

Good luck to you.

Yea just go down to the employment commison and ask them what you need to do to file for unemployment. They will give you some papers and you start filling them out. They will ask you questions. Make sure you answer them with a open answer. Like if they ask are you looking for full time work, say yes. If they ask will you take a job that might pay less, say yes. If you answer no to some questions you can;t get unemployment. I did that while in HS to get back at a company, kinda childish, but I still laugh to this day about it. :)

Oh and my exp. has been with NC, so migth be different in other states?

Don't feel bad for applying for unemployment. It's insurance that you paid for, it's not charity. As for future job applications, just be honest and explain what happened. Lies usually catch up with you.

Call the unemployment office for instructions. IIRC, you don't have to prove that you're needy. Once you qualify, you have to be actively looking for a job. The rules vary from state to state.

it's insurance that your employer paid for.. but you're right, it's not charity. it's not based on need in any way (although some states do have dependent allowances), it's based entirely on eligibility. basically, to be eligible you have to be out of work through no fault of your own, be actively seeking full-time employment, and have qualifying earnings in at least 2 of the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters (and the benefit you receive is based on the income you had during that period). :) some (but not most) states do have penalty periods, if your reason for seperation is not initially qualifying, you may be eligible for benefits after that penalty period has been served. you do have the right to appeal a decision disallowing you benefits, if you so desire.

by all means, get yourself to the office (unless you can do it online, you might check) first thing tomorrow and apply. got nothing to lose.. and the sooner you apply the sooner you'll start receiving benefits. usually you claim 2 weeks at a time, and so you have to first file the initial claim, and then you have to claim benefits for the weeks that go by, after they've gone by (because you must attest that during those weeks you were unemployed, report any temporary or part time income you may have received, and swear that you were actively looking for work.. some states require you to list job contacts each week), and then once you've claimed those weeks, they have to process them.. and they have to make the initial determination that you're unemployed for an eligible reason too.. takes time.. 4-6 weeks, typically.. so don't waste any.
