*Mods if this is considered unappropriate please feel free to lock*

Long story short I've been asked by someone to help him find a way to see what calls are being made both from and to his house as he suspects his wife is cheating on him. The phone company will no longer give people detailed lists of such a thing (think it has something to do with the Canadian privacy act or something). Anyway, I know phone taps exist but I'm wondering what is the best way to go about doing this? All he wants is a list of phone numbers both incoming and outgoing...

i think you would have to install a PBX, or do stuff that is illegal for a standard residential phone line

or hack the gibson!

I'm hoping their is something that you can simply hook up between the phone and the wall jack that will do logging...I'm still googling...

No I don't want to help him do anything illegal nor does he want to break any laws. He just wants ingoing and outgoing numbers...

Something like this should do it, though I wonder if you can pick up the proper adapters (phone jack to cassette recorder) at Radio Shack or something.

obviously not the best way, but hook up caller id service without telling the wife?
get a $5 caller id display and monitor it privately.

this is very sketchy though man.

Apparently they have it but she deletes the numbers from the phone after every phone call or something. Also, she phones her own cell phone after every call so that he can't use the "last number dialed" feature or whatever it's called...

CHECK THE LAWS BEFORE DOING THIS.

In many places it is illegal to tape somebody without their permission. We're talking jail time here.

Even if it is his own phone, and the phone bill is in his name?

Nonetheless, you're right. He doesn't want to break any laws as I mentioned before...

QFT

Regarding her deleting the caller id logs - hook up another caller id box on some out of the way jack. Deleting the logs on the phone won't affect that.

I don't know about just monitoring phone numbers, but if he's actually recording conversations he could be in big trouble. For example, in Colorado it is illegal to record a conversation unless at least one party to the conversation is aware that it is being recorded.

back in the day radio shack sold this thing with a paper tape.. that would print outgoing calls. I am sure someone makes that would save incoming calls.

If you can find that will save outgoing calls, then get an call id box, hide t somewhere and let it record incoming calls for you to review.

1) he is a controlling paraniod guy who has freaked her out with his spying ways, or
2) she is cheating on him.

You hit it right on the money Armitage, In Canada the law is the same. One party in the convo MUST consent to the convo being recorded. And since he wouldn't be a party of that convo it would be illegal to record the convo. Secondly others in the forum have hit it right on the money, Caller id box somewhere else on the line...

Also, on a side note, FOIP does not make is such that you cannot get a list of the phone #'s... I still get mine.... You just have to be the primary on the account. FYI I live in Canada.

EDIT: I just remembered that the box probally won't record outgoing calls. So if she always calls him, the box will not work. I would go for the phone records. If the phone is in her name, then switch providers or plans and have it put in his name. Then request the #'s list. Telus and Bell offer lists of outgoing calls... Seeing as how I work for Bell...

Thanks for all the replies.

A caller ID box would probably be the best way to go, yet he still wants outgoing calls too. He said he phoned Sasktel (Service Provider) and they wouldn't give him the call list so I'm not sure what the fuss was about. Are their any ID boxes that log OUTGOING calls as well...?

I'm not sure if it's illegal to tape someone without their permission (it might be). It IS, however, inadmissible in court unless BOTH parties are aware of the taping.

Google Asterisk. It's a Linux PBX software. It'll do what you need without any of that illegal recording crap. If you're good, and especially if your preexisting internet router is a Linux box located close to the service root, you can slip it in unnoticed and undetectable in a few hours.

Again, there would be no taping. All he wants is ingoing and outgoing logs where he could see phone numbers.
