I have looked around but still can not sort out everything with the 845 boards.
I know it is P4 SDRAM but what socket is it??

The first 478 chips will be 2GHz and the fastest 423 will be 2GHz.
The new boards are coming out end of this month, about the time the 2GHz is announced.
Will the chipset be used for both versions of the P4? Why have a cheap mobo if it only runs the top end CPU?

I845 chipset can support either S478 or S423 depending upon the implementation. Initial boards will be supporting S423, and later there will be S478 Brookdale boards.
Brookdale=I845 codename.

845 (Formerly known as Brookdale) supports both Socket 423 Williamette's + Socket 478 Williamette's and Northwood's.

True, but the first 478 chips will still be based on the Williamette core, 2GHz Northwood's won't be here until October or so

Yup, u got the right idea. The Willy 2GHz will be avialable in Socket 478 for the most part, but there probably will be S423's out there.

Yeah, it will be used for all versions of P4 depending on the Socket. Why have a cheap mobo? Because Intel is so desperately trying to position the P4 as the leader in the mainstream, and this seemed like the easiest way to them, couple P4 with SDRAM, and lose 20-30% of performance, who cares? *sarcasm*
