Need info--consulting engineers

I'm to write a short essay on what exactly a consulting engineer does and why I should consider it as a career. Yes, I know, people consult them and they give advice. I think I got some of what I'm going to say already, but as always, it's the introduction that's giving me trouble. Perhaps once I have more info I'll be able to slap something together. Anyone???
