A friend of mine is headed to a conference in Chicago this weekend (leaving tomorrow, through Sunday). She's staying downtown at the Sheraton, just off Michigan Ave. She's never been there before, has some free time, and wants some ideas on what to see, where to eat, etc.

I've taken a few vacations to Chicago, but it's been a couple years. My initial recommendations for her were:

the Art Institute, maybe the Field Museum, John Hancock Observatory
Giordano's or Gino's East for pizza, Frontera Grill
Green Mill or Andy's Jazz Club, Red Headed Piano Bar
Water Tower Place, Michigan Ave obviously for shopping.
I liked the Rush/Division bar scene, but any other bar recommendations?

Any other ideas? I'm just trying to think of a "Best of Chicago" thing for her and that's what I came up with so far.

this is an honest, non-dick response.... do a search here for Chicago, there are like 10 threads full of great ideas

Thanks - guess I just didn't look hard enough....hehe.

Anyone have any ideas for food close to the Sheraton she's staying at? It's the one just north of the river, on Water St.

Sears Tower, but at night.

That is exactly what I did. Not intentionally, but I was too busy trying to finish a deep dish pizza at the Giordano's down stairs. It was great! No crowd, no lines and an amazing orange glow from the city.

For a daytime view, grab a buffet lunch at the restaurant at the top of the Hancock building. It pretty much costs the same as paying for the view alone.

I got the CityPass, so I did all the touristy things. I also went to Andy's Jazz Club and took the architecture boat tour (it was actually quite fun). To top it off, I also got to turn on the Buckingham Fountain, which is supposed to mark the start of summer.

Hey,
If your friend is a girl, then no worries..
She can shop till she drops.
She'll be smack in the middle of shopping district..
Museums are just several block south from her.

For the authentic Chicago Experience, have her go to city hall, dump a pile of cash on the counter of the front desk, and expect absolutely nothing in return.

No no, you may get a Senate seat if you give enough money....🙂
