I am using Roadrunner for cable internet. They allow up to 4 IP's.

So i have two systems running into an 8 port hub, with the hub going to the modem. Internet works fine on both of them, but I can't see either system in network neighborhood.

I'd prefer not to use Netbieu, but will if its the only way to work.

The IP on one system is 65.30.119.xx
the other is 65.30.117.24

subnetmask for both is 255.255.240.0

Any ideas???
 
Lets start with the stupid stuff. You have file and pring sharing enabled on bith? You have both on the same workgroup? You have the drives on each shared? What OS are they BTW?
 
both are XP
both have stuff shared and it was working

i just moved from IL to KC... in IL i was behind a linksys router
i don't need that here, since Roadrunner gives me 4 IP's

the only thing thats different is I went from static intranet class C IPs to dynamic internet class A ips
 
go to a command prompt and try to ping each other. Do the rigs see themselves in NN?

I just pinged one and it says the network is unknown.

I can browse the web on both of them fine

i can't see the other system in network neighborhood though, and the mapped network drives don't connect....
 
I think I had a similar problem but with static IPs. Solution was to edit lmhosts file on each machine and translate the names to the ips and then manually do your mappings and sharings. For dynamic ips, try enabling netbios on the tcpip under advanced. Hope this helps.

yeah, manually editing lmhosts on both boxes should make sure the shares always work...

the lease expires every day... not sure if they issue a new IP then or not...

however...i enabled NetBios, rebooted, and it worked... for about 10 minutes
then it quit working again

try netbeui.

You're IP addresses appear to be from different IP networks. Can you post the IP address, mask and default gateway of each adapter?

You should be fine using netbeui however.
