sup AT! Again, i am in dire need of your expert advise. My Windows XP Professional wont boot. It used to work before but after coming back from a three day break, it would no longer go into Windows. What happens is that it says an " important file" (i forgot what it was) is missing or corrupted and have to reboot using the winXP cd and go to repair. So i do it and in a couple of minutes, im greeted by a DOS screen. My problem is, what do i do? I listed the commands available and have tried most of what i think applies to my problem but none solves it. Now in my distress of not being able to use my modded rig ( :) ) i have installed winME on the 2nd partition and am currently using it. Used to be, i would have just reinstalled windows 98 if the "critical files" get damaged but WinXP says all my settings and my "My Documents" folder will be deleted. what do i do? i have tried the system recovery but didnt have the knowledge to create the disk needed for that precaution. can anyone help me?

the "dos" screen is meant as an advanced troubleshooting tool for you to manualy fix files.

if XP works like 2k then I think you need to do the folloiwing.

instead of selecting the repair mode from the XP CD, choose to install .

it will then give you the option to either reformat and clean install, or attempt to overwirte the existing OS files. if you chose the latter, it will not delete your old files, but you will lose stuff liek preferences, bookmarks, cookies, and shortcuts.

of course the best options is to do a clean INstall. this is why it is important to backup stuff, and make emergency repair disks ;) but i never do that either.
