Need help with UPS, as in backup power

CompUSA has this IBM Office Professional 700 UPS System on sale until the 24. I've been wanting to get a UPS and this one has more than enough power but its only $100.

The only thing I don't understand is what does SNMP compatible mean? I understand that you can hook it up to the serial port and it will shut down your computer with their sofware.

Also, has anyone heard anything good or bad about them?

I personally hate TrippLite and go for APC whenever possible. More of a personal issue than objectevly proven fact. TrippLite does make excellent UPSes. Overall it appears to be sufficient for a system and monitor. Most major manufacturers include autoshutdown software in the event of a extended outage. I've had no experience with TrippLite's software but APC's PowerChute will monitor and long line conditions and even save doucments before safely downing a system.

SNMP is Simple Network Management Protocol. It allows IT managers, net admins, etc. to monitor and track all sorts of equipment over a network. This part shouldn't apply to you.

The APC are pretty good but their monitoring software sucks you need SMARTER UPS to get the temperature graphics, etc.etc. Warranty was great, had a ups that died and they replaced it..

I actually have 2 of these, picked them up a few weeks ago. I don't have the serial port thing or software installed since I'm here like all the time anyway.

I just checked the boxes they came in and the manuals and didn't see a mention of SNMP - maybe it's related to the software?

Anyway, I like 'em - they have a feature that wasn't on other UPS' I had which is the abilty to shut off the warning beeps

IIRC, you can buy a special serial cable that give it the ability to shutdown during an outage. The software can be downloaded for free on TrippLite's website.

Very nice deal! I've been using the TrippLite branded version of this UPS for well over a year now (picked it up for $50 when Staples screwed up their print ad ). It hasn't so much as hiccupped during that time, which I consider to be a very good sign.

I also have APC (excellent) and have used SL Waber (GARBAGE) and PK Electronics (good also).

TrippLite is JUNK! I had a TrippLite malfunction and SEND surges through my speakers toasting my sound card. Not to mention a slew of other problems. I would rather plug my computer into the wall during a lightning storm than use another TrippLite UPS.

APC on the other hand is excellent. I bought a Back-UPS Pro 650 over 2 years ago and have not had a SINGLE problem since!
