need help with speed problem

My parent's recently got a wireless USB adapter, but it's having some speed issues.

On occasion, about once a day, the internet speed seems to slow down substantially. According to speedtest.net it goes down to 1 Mbps. It's usually around 35 Mbps.

The only thing that seems to fix it is restarting the computer, which works every time, although its annoying to have to do that.


They have 2 computers set up, one runs wired from their router, the other is on the wireless USB adapter. The wired connection has no issues, and when the wireless computer was wired, it had no issues either.

Does anyone know what may be causing the speed issue and need to restart?

Probably not an issue, given what parents usually have, but ugh.

Btw, the real answer is "buy a 20ft ethernet cable". Can't get more stable than wired.
 
probably overheating. That is a problem with lots of those little USB WiFi dongles. When they start overheating, they slow down or fail.

Edit: If you can't run a cable, what about a PCI or PCI-E wifi card? Or using a router flashed with DD-WRT and set to client mode?
