Need help with sound on ASUS MEW-AML

This board locks up solid installing the sound drivers for the onboard audio(Crystal CS4280-CM hardware chip)after clean installs of Win95 or98se. When I clean install WinME it locks up after OS-installed audio drivers. It came flashed with the beta 3 001 bios(date 03/06/00), and still no luck after being flashed with the beta 3 006 bios(date 2/15/01). There are no options for disabling the audio in the bios. The only card running on it is an Adaptec 2940AU SCSI controller with an IBM SCSI 2.1GB HDD(I don't have a spare IDE drive available to try) and NEC 466 SCSI 40X CD-ROM. It runs fine with no audio drivers installed or with them disabled. Any ideas?

OK I tried WinXPpro, same problem, locks up hard at the end of setup. Anyone run across this problem before? Any ideas? Thanks.

We have straight MEWS. Never had an issue like that. I'm not exactly what sound chip is onboard. Flash to latest bios and check any and all jumpers. Maybe disable sound until windows is up and running.

Exchanged the MEW-AML for an MEW-AM(better board anyway 'cause it has onboard video ram) and problem solved...go figure.

Sorry didn't get back to you. I did not see the thread casue it dropped. Glad to know the issue is resolved. I use the standard driver that w2k loads. I've also grabbed it off of windowsupdate before. I think you can also use the drivers for the d815eea boards.

no sweat. OT In case anyone is interested I ran some 3dmk2k(using default settings) benches on both boards using a Cel433;

• AML/AM set at 66FSB/100MEM...831/930
• AML/AM set at 70/105...873/972
• AML/AM set at 75/112.5...970/1077

Both scores are pretty good considering the old chipset, small amount of shared video ram(1MB/4+1MB) and the 433 CPU.
