need help with some software that wont activate

I still use a stock chart program called Supercharts software and with it a program called Stock Quotes Express( SQE), to download daily internet data, usually from yahoo.. The program is still being sold but there is no support and the website is essentially dead.

I have installed SQE on a new drive . When I purchased it I got a little file called regkey that put in a registry entry and activated the software when I would unzip it.

I am using the same OS xp pro, but the regkey will not activate the software. I cant open up the key to see what its doing and my pc knowledge is minimal. I would like to continue using this SQE if I can get this key to work( can't so far).

If there is someone that knows this stuff and can give me some help to get it to work with the key I would appreciate it. how to get the program working by using the key( dont know whats inside) in a different way. Any help appreciated, thank you

I don't really know my stuff, but I'll take a look at the key if you like. PM me if you're interested.

It looks like it's just a plain old registry key. I would try reinstalling the software, then rerunning the reg key, and see if it works then.

Edit:
You can also try changing the order of the install. Key first then program, and if that doesn't work, program first, then key.

Since you have the key file what you should do is first make a backup of your registry in case you mess up.
Next uninstall the app in question, removing any folders and leftover files related to it,
both in Program Files & under App Data

Next remove any registry keys related to the program. Then reboot and try to install it again.
Usually that type of license key will get added to the registry with a Double Click (provided the file ends in .reg)

I looked at the system that it is currently working on and it ( the registry entries) are exactly the same on the pc that wont activate, I did the uninstalls but it did not work.
