Hi all,

This is a new install (one month old) of windows 7 x64 ultimate
Specs:
Core i5 3570K
16gb ram
gtx 680
samsung 840 ssd (os drive)
WD 2 TB green hdd (media)

The computer ran and started fine for a while. I rarely restarted it. Last week I found that the boot took forever. I had to restart for one thing or another and it hung after the "starting windows" screen. It says "welcome" with a little spinning circle for a couple of minutes. Sometimes it boots to just a black screen with a cursor. Sometimes it starts up after a couple min. Either way it isn't right.

Here is my boot log:

Can anyone help me? I've googled and searched and searched and haven't been able to fix shit. It seems like it doesn't happen in safe boot (i only tried it once and it seemed to boot quickly).

If it hangs at the welcome screen it is typically a driver or something in your startup group.

It is most likely a driver issue, remove the GFX card, uninstall software, try on mobo VDU output, if still a problem, then come back to us :)

I also have no programs in my startup folder. I checked msconfig for what other startup programs there are and they were all Intel things.

I can try removing the GFX card and uninstalling the software. That isn't a problem. I'll let you know.

Is there a way to run something like a driver cleaner or the like?

Do you have a wireless network card in the computer? Is it sharing folders with another computer/ device on the network?

I do not have a wireless network card.

It shouldn't be sharing folders with other computers. The only other computer in the house is an iMac, and it hasn't been configured to share anything.

The boot log doesnt really tell you much other than drivers loaded. You need to create custom views in Event Viewer for boot degradation and boot time that will show how long each each driver/process is taking to load:

http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/wi...down-issues-that-cause-slower-boot-times/3253

I actually tried that! The problem I had was that I couldn't find information on the Event ID's I found.

I found Event ID 108 twice and Event ID 106 once. As that article states, the Prefetch is a tough nut to crack. The Event ID 108 led me nowhere. i couldn't find out anything about it.

Could it be a windows update install that did not work correctly? I have seen three of them say "failed" in the update log.

If that is the case, how do I fix it?

well, if it no longer shows available in windows update, hopefully it is in the installed updates list in programs and features; if not I know of nothing short of a re-install

Shit. That's what i was worried about. i really wanted to avoid a reinstall.

I guess I'll just live with it. A slow boot is annoying, but since I don't reboot often it isn't the end of the world.

You could uninstall all the updates going back to the start of the issue, run a registry cleaner, then let Windows update find them again. Worth a shot if a re-install is the only other option.

I just couldn't live with a slow bootup on an SSD drive.

I checked the event log again. It is definitely Event 108, Name: PreShellInit

Currently running the scans.

First, try disconnecting the WD Green drive from the sata controller and boot up to see if you start normally. If that has no effect try disabling the onboard network controller in the motherboard bios and then boot into windows.

For troubleshooting purposes, what motherboard do you have and what sata ports are you using for your drives?
How are your sata ports configured in your bios?
Have you checked for updates for your ssd's firmware?

When you say "nothing came up", what do you mean? I've seen SFC throw up errors even on healthy systems, and something always comes up for CHKDSK.

SFC just said (and I'm paraphrasing) "no errors found"

CHKDSK showed zero bad files. It went through all 5 tests.

My motherboard is the Asrock Z77 Extreme 4. I am using Sata 3_1 for the SSD and Sata 2_1 for the WD drive.

What makes you think it might be the onboard network controller?

What exactly is PrefetchInit?
