Need help with shutdowns...

So I recently built a computer that is being used to digitize videos and later store them as a server. The problem is that it shuts down when I encode the videos from AVI to DivX. There are no problems otherwise!

Hardware is as follows:
ASUS A8N-SLI-Deluxe
2X 1Gb G.SKill pc3200 RAM
eVGA 6600GT PCI-E
AMD Opteron 175 dualcore cpu (Not overclocked)
Antec Trupower 500W PSU
Seagate 160Gb 7200.9 HD for OS/APPS
2X WD 400Gb SATAII drives for videos

Everything works fine until I encode to DivX, and even then it only shuts down sometimes (but usually). The computer has never been connected to the internet and has VERRY minimal software installed. Just PRemiere elements, Cyberlink powerDVD, and DivX encoder. Temps hover at 40-45 under load. Idle at 35, so that doesn't seem to be the problem. Also, windows gives no errors and doesn't recognize any kind of improper shutdown. There is no warning before it happens either. And finally, the numlock light on the keyboard stays on when it shuts down.

I googled the crap out of it, and did find someoen who had had a similar problem with the same mobo, and it seemed to fix it (I think, as that was the last post he made in the forum) when he de-activated the hardware firewall, but I never installed the firewall on my system. Events reader has loads of warnings, but nothing seems pertinent...

Any thoughts? I'm stumped!

Perhaps that firewall is active regardless of if the software is installed or not, maybe you should turn it off in the bois or something.

Could be the power supply too.

I've looked through all the bios(As far as I know) and I couldn't find any options to turn it off. I'll look again, but I checked pretttttttttttttttttttttty thoroughly. Is there a way to check the psu without switching it out for a different one?

I also thought if psu's fail, you need to reset the power before the computer would turn back on? i.e. unplug it then plug it back in. Is that not the case?

I think I figured it out... After a bit more googling on the subject, I found other people with similar problems. After I took a closer look at the event viewer, I noticed a few userenv 1517 warning messages that seemed to be timed around when the computer turned itself off. I downloaded and ran UPHCLEAN. I am now converting my third divx in a row without any power-offs (Fingers crossed)!

But it seems to have remedied the situation.

Anyone know what would cause that error? I never even set up more than one user profile? Was it a registry problem? I've never experienced this before.

Thanks for all the suggestions up until now.

Well no such luck. It encoded about 4 files and then on the 5th one... Turned itself off again. It'd never made it past 1 complete file before. If it's any help, I did defrag the hd before I encoded that group. So perhaps the hd's are to blame somehow?

So I've done some more wiht this problem... My comptuer also shuts itself off while running prime95 torture test. On the 4th test...

I also ran MemTest86 and got an error message. Finally getting to the bottom of this. RIGHT when memtest starts loading I get this error:

The system memory manager has detected an error caused by a fault in one of the device drivers or programs loaded in the system.

Due to this fault the system is probably in an unstable state, and you are therefore recommended to reboot the computer immediately. If the problem persists, then try to isolate which program is at fault. Then it gives me a bunch of advanced technical information, which I could type out if you think it might help. a few letters followed by numbers.

What should I do? Try re-installing windows? I just flashed my bios, and made sure I had all the up-to-date drivers. Also, no firewall installed. Any thoughts? This is driving me crazy! Should I just start unloading programs one at a time? I'm going to run the test with only one stick of ram in... See if that helps...

I switched out the ram, one at a time... Same deal. Same error... And if it matters, the computer freezes up when it gets that error message. It says to press ctrl+alt+delete or any key but the keyboard doesn't work...
