ok i just registered with some company that now i have a domain name but im clueless on what to do, basically i want a machine that runs a web server or let a host run a web server, like xxx.tripod.com. but linked the ftp site to this domain name i just got, like www.yahoo.com actually linked to yahoo.tripod.com.

here what i got:

Domain Name: blab blab
Registrar:
Whois Server:
Referral URL:
Name Server: dns1.something something
Name Server:Dns2.something sommething

how do i set my own web sever on my comp, i have my machine running xp and anotherone running winME, we gonna test it on our machines then buy a crappy comp just for the web server.

I DO HAVE PERMANT IPs, on both computers, one is Win Me and one is XP, i have win 2000 as well.

what the hell are you saying, first I would rewrite your post in english please.

Ok, now to set up a wetsite/server, it sounds like you have a domain, so youll need the domain to point to your permanent IP, this can be done with whoever you bought the domain from. Next, set up win2k with IIS or a nice linux box and when someone goes to www.yourdomain.com it will go to your IP and connect to your PC.

I think DAM has answered your question? If not not re-stating what you want and you might get more help.

if the nameservers belong to your registrar, you should be able to log in via their system and specify your IP address.

1) Web server

If you want to set up your own web server, I suggest using Apache. It will run fine on your 2k or xp machine. There's documentation on the website about configuring it. If you are behind a router make sure to forward port 80 (default http port) to internal ip (your webserver).

2) Domain Name Server

You will need a domain name server. There are web sites that offer a free service. I strongly recommend ZoneEdit. That's what I'm using to run my web server. After you have signed up with them, you will need to enter the name servers provided by ZoneEdit into the company that you registered your domain with.

3) FTP Server

If you want your FTP server to have a domain name (such as ftp.domain.com) you will also need a name server. What I suggest is using No-IP. Or you can probably use the ZoneEdit service as well although I've never tried it. Next you will need a FTP server. Most people prefer Serv-U.

actually, most people prefer proftpd.

edit: I assumed he was using Unix. Proftpd doesn't come for windows. Serv-U is perfectly acceptable. I'll shut up now.

Actually, most smart (i.e. BSD, Linux) people prefer ProFTPD. :D :D

What is your connection to the Internet. If you have DSL or Cable, you can run the webserver yourself. It sounds like you have a DNS issue. You need to point your DNS servers to the correct IP address or domain name you want. Please be more detailed.

I'll try to explain this, without it being a book.

DNS -
You've registered your domain name. When you registered it, what name servers did you list as being authoratative for your domain? Like payjo said, ZoneEdit is a great free DNS solution. If you decide to use them, you will have to register there, and then update your domain with zone edits name servers as the name servers responsible for your domain.

When you register at Zone Edit, you can setup a "Cname" to point www.yourdomain.com to point to xxx.tripod.com. Then add an "A" record for "ftp.yourdomain.com" to point to the IP address of your ftp servers IP address.

You didn't mention anything about email... If you plan on setting up email for the new domain, you can download Post.Office from software.com. It's free for ten users, but you will have to make a few changes for it run on 2k. You can find the directions on their site. You will also need to setup an MX record at zone edit.

Since you don't have much experience with this, you may want to consider having a webhosting company handle all this. You can find some different ones on cnet.com. They have many that they rated, and you can avoid all of this hassle...
