I recently tore apart an old server and turned it into a computer for my dad. I had a tape drive left over, so I put in my pc. The drive is a Seagate Hornet 8 (stt8000n). The drive itself is SCSI and its on an Adaptec AHA-2940AU SCSI adapter. My computer is running Windows XP Home SP2.

Both the drive and the adapter show up in device manager, but the drive does not appear in My Computer. I dont have any manuals or anything.

Can someone help me get this setup?

Tape devices are accessed using backup software.

You can download a trial of Veritas Backup Exec from their site.

You may be able to recognise the drive through the backup utility built into Windows as well.

EDIT: This device supports a max of 4G native / 8GB compressed.

Cheers!

Thanks sharkkeeper. I'll give that a try.

spikesoldior - I only have about 12 gigs of data that I really want to backup. So I can buy two tapes (which cost me $10 total) or spend about $100 on a dvd burner. I also see some sort of novelty associated with having it.
