Hi All. I am a cheap ass, so this may be hard. Have an older mattress that is sagging and my back kills me each morning after waking up. I can?t afford a new bed (at least $1k+) right now. Can I put anything where the sag is for a little support. Sand (lol)? Foam? Something that doesn?t make me more uncomfortable in the morning. Would Bed and Bath or even Target have anything that can help?

a new bed doesn't cost 1k.
get something decent, anything is better than a sagging mattress.

Just put in under the center of the mattress where the sag is, correct? So it would be a 24" strip x 60 inches? Or do I need to cover the entire size of the mattress with the piece of plywood?

Either way, but the larger the better so you won't feel the transition between plywood and no plywood.

if possible, the plywood should be about 2-4 inches smaller than the dimensions of the mattress above it
a smaller piece will still help centered under the sag, but larger will help spread out the force of the body above it

If the sag is in the top mattress, (and in my experience, it's the mattress that wears out, not the box springs) plywood will only make things firmer. It won't help with the sag.

Only one side is used on the queen sized bed and the sag is dead center. Maybe its because I haven't tried it, but it doesn't seem like a 1" board evenly displaced under the mattress will prop up that spot in the middle? Maybe its just me? BTW, is 1" thickness overkill if I do this?

Yeah, the box spring is fine. The sag really starts on the pillow top and just goes from there. And of course its not the type of mattress where I can flip it over.

Yep. If it's the mattress, flip it over. Even if it's a pillow top, this should help.

We turn our mattress every two weeks. One time top for bottom, the next time, also head for foot. Helps to spread out the wear.

this is the correct way according to a few mattress shops I've dealt with
