Need help with remote login

I have 2 computers at home. One is a laptop, the other is a Dell desktop. The thing is, I dont have a monitor for it. I am having to use logmein.com to login to the PC. Instead of using precious ISP bandwidth, I want to use my network bandwidth. Both PC's are Windows XP. What can I setup to login to the computer through the laptop that stay's within the network, and does NOT use the internet to access the computer 2 feet away. Thanks!

You can setup Remote Desktop between the two.

In your System Properties(?), there is a tab for "Remote Desktop". Select that and allow remote connections. On your laptop, you will find the option to use Remote Desktop through...Start->Programs->Accessories....Communication? Administrative Tools?(I really need to get off my Mac...haha). Once that is started, try typing in the host name or IP of the desktop, it will remote connect. From there you will need to login using the username/password you have setup.

Note: Any current user logged in on the desktop will be logged off automatically when logging in remotely with Remote Desktop. However, the session started with Remote Desktop will be continued if disconnecting and reconnecting again.

UltraVNC and TightVNC work as well. UltraVNC is loaded with too many options, maybe more for advanced users? It does require password before remote connect though, which is nice sometimes.

Is there anything I need to setup on the Desktop to allow remote login to work? I am logging in to 192.168.1.102(the IP of the DESKTOP) and the user name is Administrator and no password. Still is not working. Anything I am missing?

Is it prompting you for the user and password when you go to login? I can't remember whether you get prompted first before it remote connects, or whether it automatically connects and prompts you to login to the actual desktop.

Recheck what you actually have the account name/password set to.

My co worker is telling me I have to setup a VPN on the desktop(machine I am logging in to). Is this true?

Umm...No?

Are you at work? The network setup may have something to do with it. If you are on the same router/switch VPN is not needed.

Also, if you don't get this solved as quickly as you'd like, or if nothing seems to work, try reposting this in the Network section. People there may have a more exact/accurate solution.

You need to enable remote desktop first. Then, your adiministrator account needs a password. Windows automatically denies RDP connections to accounts without passwords

That should be the solution. Administrator account needs a password. I think in my steps earlier I said to set that up. Maybe I wasn't specific on the "enabled" part.
