Need help with remote desktop on home network

Have two computers. Primary system has XP Pro(amd xp2200) and is connected to dsl by a 10/100 built into motherboard, and to the other computer by a pci 10/100 card. Second system has XP Pro (p4 2.4) and the systems are connected to each other using 10/100 built into the motherboard and a crossover lan connection <100ft.

The second computer is used by my nine and six year old girls and I need to have control over what they are doing.

Both computers are working properly and can share files over the network including the dsl connection. I'm want to:
1. Take over either computer from the other one.
2. Start and shutdown programs remotely.
3. Watch what the other computer user is doing with out them knowing it.
4. Take over their mouse and keyboard even when they are using it.

Tia,
Phil

Windows XP Pro includes a Remoter Desktop, and there are many third party Remoter Control programs as well.

Whether to use Win Remote Desktop (RTP) or a regular remote program might depend in the way you are using it, and who, or what is on the other side. RDT is more like an OS thing rather than an application.

I use RDT between spots that I need to Connect to Repetitively for long periods of time and when on the other side there is someone who understands how it works. I would set it up, and insist that No one would touch the settings.

Otherwise I use Ultr@VNC (free program). It provides: Remote Control, File Transfer, and Chat between LAN computers or over the Internet. It takes only few minutes to set it.

For security purpose, and to avoid System's load on the system resources I want the remote application out of the picture once the session is terminated. Ultra@VNC and few other VNC variants provide this capacity.

In most cases, even if some one "played" with the system I still will be able to connect with VNC.

You will find every thing you need in order to set it here: Ultr@VNC - Installation, and Settings

If you decide to go the RDT way, here you have two links with help for Win Remote Desktop (RDT).

Great post!
I think I'm going to try this on my wife's machine.

Remote Desktop will blank the screen of the computer you are using, so you don't want to use that in terms of seeing that they are doing and move their mouse.

Remote desktop is out as far as monitoring realtime. Symantec PC Anywhere will work but cost $$$. So your best bet will be VNC. Also, XP have remote Assistance that you can use for real time help, but someone have to be on the second computer to give you permission.
