I have some old stuff that I want to turn into a little server. I was thinking about getting this Lian-Li case:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...1-112-024&catalog=7&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=0

and getting the Promise SX6000 ATA RAID controller:

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=16-102-006&depa=0

and the 550 watt Antec TruePower power supply.

This is what I have to put in it:

ASUS CUSL2-C mobo
1GHz P3
512MB PC133 RAM
Pioneer DVD ROM
Plextor CDRW
GeForce2 Ultra
NIC Card
3.5" Floppy Drive
1 ATA hard drive just for the OS

+ Promise RAID controller with 6 ATA drives attached

+ however many fans I can fit in there

I'm concerned that the case might be a little too small and not have adequate cooling ability. Also I would like to know people's opinions and experience regarding hooking all that stuff up to that size power supply. Thanks for any help!

Welcome to the Forums klezmer41. :)

For the other folks:

link to the RAID card

Now, what do you need a six-drive RAID for in a home server? Unless you have a gigabit network, the data ain't goin' anywhere over your network any faster than about 10 megabytes per second (100-megabit/sec = 12.5 megabytes per second, and subtract some for overhead). If you're doing it strictly for failure resistance (RAID1 mirroring) then that might make sense. :)

I have a variant of that case and I wouldn't suggest putting 8 hard drives into it. Unless you modify the case, its cooling properties are not so good (mine is modified). I would suggest getting one of the Chieftec true full-tower cases, which have two separate 3-drive cages that both have 80mm fan mounts in them, and pair that up with your TruePower 550. Bonus: they're a lot less money, too, how's $65 sound? :)
