Need help with Power supply problem !!!!!!!!!

CraigRT

Lifer
I have gone thru 2 new power supplies and the same crap still happens.
I put in the new PSU, boot up, all is fine... i run Quake III and my screen shuts off and i lose video!!!
I KNOW it's a PSU problem cause all is fine with my old 250W ATX supply!

I have tried an In-Win Powerman 300W and a Antec PP303X and the same crap still happens with both!
I've had to give both back cause of the stupid problems!

my system consists of what is below, runnin 98SE
need to know anymore ask me, thank you for any help you can get me on this silly problem!!

It's not my home wiring cause i play Q3 for hours, run system all night, etc with old PSU.

and keep in mind the computer keeps running the monitor just shuts off and it locks up cause of that.

it's quite odd.

Why don't you continue to use the 250watt?

Reseat the video card/CPU/Ram (check that tightening the screw doesn't pull the card out)
Check the video cable for bent pins and tighten it good.

Does the monitor turn right off or go into powersaving mode?

I don't think the problem is your PSU, I think its your mobo or some device installed in it. El Cheapo supplies frequently have no over-voltage or over-current protection. I suspect that your new supplies do have protection and they are 'tripping'. When this happens its normal that you have to unplug the supply from the outlet before the system will power up again, is this the case. Try reducing the number of components in your system to bare minimum.

The problem most likely the Asus V7700 card. It is a big time power hog. Try a different video card and see what happens. I had the same problem with a Asus V6800.

I also cannot see the V7700 being the problem as my older weaker PSU had no problems running the stuff!

and about using my old supply - i am a hardware finatic and i don't just use what works i buy new stuff cause i want to 🙂

so i want to make this 300W PSU work!

<< and keep in mind the computer keeps running the monitor just shuts off and it locks up cause of that. >>

What does the power supply have to do with the monitor? The monitor doesn't plug into the power supply, you know.

Right! Then you will have to live with component incompatibilities at times. The V7700 may have been OK on your other system . . . so what was changed? It would then seem to be the Soyo mobo . . . or its BIOS . . . or ???

The key to diagnostics is to minimize the variables. Start with what works, and then test your compnents at each upgrade integration point. Not all A-1 components are necessarily right for each other.

I know it sounds weird bout the monitor shutting off and the power supply being at fault... well ALL I CHANGED WAS THE POWER SUPPLY
nothing else!
in 2 days gone thru 3 PSU's and the only one that works is the 250W i was using!

If i put the 250W back in Q3 will run fine, if i have my Antec in, it won't!

and as i said before all i swapped was the PSU!

the monitor will shut off and the light goes orange, standby mode or whatever it is. and the game then locks cause of the lost signal i guess
(music keeps playing for a few seconds before it locks)

So i don't know what to do... I COULD just use my old PSU but i spent 70 bucks on an upgraded one and i want it to work!

Just got back from playing about an hour and a half of Q3 without a hitch. Stupid PSU probs!! 😛

(the 250 is in)

I have no clue what is up with this!

So, have you tried reducing the components in your system ?? Do you need to unplug before the system will power up?? As I posted earlier, the 250 is not detecting an over-voltage over-current condition properly. The only way to determine the problem is by eliminating components.

I have not removed anything from the system, but I might start to do that later, i have a feeling it's the GeForce conflict but there's nothing i can do, i am not giving up my GeForce 2 for a power supply!
so i have to make it work as is!

and no it works just as it should, no having to unplug or anything like that.
