I have assembled a new pc for a friend with the following specs:
Asus A7N8X deluxe
Athlon XP 2500+
2*256MB Infineon PC2700 CL2,5
Ati Radeon 9700 Pro
WD 80GB JB model
noname case 350W
one case fan blowing out at the back
The problem is, we have done 3 installs of Win XP, the last one only with Nvidia All-in-ones's, the catalyst's and control panel (3.2), SP1 for XP Pro and a few programs, nothing spectacular, just Office XP, Nero, Power DVD etc. and a few games.
The system works well for a while, doing office stuff, games without a hitch (Unreal 2, Battlefield 1942, so the real demanding ones), but then after a manual restart, we get starnge errors at bootup, that he cannot find certain files on C: and D: because he could not write them back. In connection to that, we get artefacts all over the screen, black dots, white dots and parts of the screen are scrambled (stripes).
What is wrong? Could the power source be too weak? Is the harddrive damaged? I am really confused although i have put together many pc's, but this one was for a good friend, so help would be greatly appreciated!
Update:
Now we had only the messed up graphics, no errors of any sort and not after a reboot. My friend started Unreal 2 and the artefacts were gone. We haven't had those errors at startup ("could not write"), I have mentioned above with this install, so maybe we have eliminated this problem by not installing some stuff (my thought was, the fast shutdown option in XP-AntiSpy may have caused this, because it wouldn't let the apps finish installation jobs before rebooting).
