This will be a dual booting box,Suse or Mepis & XP.

I will not be overclocking.

Doom 3 & half Life need to be smooth.

I will also be watching DVDs

I would like to stay in the $1400 range, without the monitor, but I am will to go a little more if I believe the benefit outweighs the cost.

There is no war beteen Intel & AMD at my house, either is fine.

A Nvidia 7800GT is the only component that I more then 75% sure of.

Getting a 7800GT is a bad idea. It's a generation out of date, the 7900GT is faster, the same price and draws less power.

What monitor do you have?

Are you going to do anything other than gaming? If not then you will not see any difference between a 6400 and a 6800 CPU as you'd be hitting a graphics card limitation.

I think you may be heading for a build way under budget.
