I built a new system today that I'm having some trouble with. It powers up fine but when it does POST if detects the hard drive and dvd-rw, but it comes up with a message that says "overclocking failed! please enter setup to re-configure your system", but when I enter the BIOS I don't see anything wrong. All my parts seem to work fine too. Once I exit the BIOS it shows the motherboard logo and the Windows XP logo, and then nothing happens. I'm thinking its a problem in the bios because it keeps showing the error message. HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Post your full specs, brand & model of every part including the power supply.

Also, did you just dump your old hard drive into the new mobo without doing a fresh install of Windows? because that often does not work.

Here are my specs:
Opteron 165
1gb crucial ballistix
620W Enermax Liberty modular psu
x1800xt pci-e video card
audigy 2 zs sound card
200gig maxtor ide

and an Asus A8R-MVP motherboard.

1) if you didn't set the memory voltage already, set it to 2.8 volts like your Ballistix is wanting.

2) if your Asus's EZ-Plug isn't hooked up, hook it up. More power delivery won't hurt anything. The EZ-Plug is the 4-pin plug just above the upper video-card slot, like a DVD drive takes.

3) make sure your CLRTC jumper is not in the CLEAR position

4) if the video card doesn't already have its auxiliary power cable plugged in, then I doubt you'd even get video, but... check to make sure it's hooked up. If both ends of the modular cable are physically the same, refer to Enermax's owner's manual to ensure that you get the correct end plugged into the video card :Q I know this is a "gotcha" with the Antec modular NeoHE's, you can plug them in the wrong way 'round.

5) if you have a voltmeter or multimeter, remove the CMOS battery and check that it's not low/dead.

I changed the memory voltage to 2.8V, checked the jumper, the ez plug is hooked up....Also I checked the manual for the enermax to see if you have to have the pci-e cable a certain way and it didn't say anything, but I'm going to change it anyways, just to see if it works. I'll keep you posted.

I wouldn't change the PCIe power cable if it's been working. :Q If it's like the Antec, then that would be A Bad Thing To Do?. And it wouldn't cause your error message per se.

At first I thought my processor was overheating, but in the bios its running at a cool 27 degrees
Do you have any reason to particularly suspect that the processor is overheating? You're not running it without the heatsink and thermal compound, are you? 😱

I guess it couldn't hurt to ask if your ATX12V cable is plugged in.

The processor wasn't overheating....I checked the temps in the bios and it was at 27 degrees. I tried a different video card, and was able to get back into the bios, but once I left the bios windows wouldn't load. Just a blank screen. Also the computer makes a sort of clicking noise. I checked all the connections and nothing seemed out of place. Is there a way to update the bios without being in windows? I know there is a bios update that this board needs. ???????

So I put the x1800 in my old computer to see if it would work and the computer gave a series of 8 short beeps which means the video card is probably dead, but that still doesn't explain why I wasn't able to get into windows with the other video card. ????
