Hi,
I just got a OEM Maxtor 80Gb ATA100 drive. I'm running an Abit BP6 motherborad with UDMA33 and UDMA66 contollers on it.
I got the drive, formated it using Partition Magic 5.0 to NTFS but when I copy files from my Old HD to this one it's really slow and after a while it'll stop and win2K reports error saying the path isn't correct, and display an Unsafe Hardware Eject message (I didn't remove the HD myself, and it's an internal) I check the cables and it's fine.
I tried to use MaxBlast from Maxtor (EZDrive) and run diag on that, and it gives me error code V80VL1 and then I use PowerDiag 2.4 (another utility from maxtor's site) and PowerDiag reports No Error whatsoever, it pass the recertify test as well.
I tried to connect the drive to the UDMA 33 and 66.. but the 66 controller won't work well (bios v1.26), when I try to reformat (into small partition) it hangs... and the 33 controller gave me same troubles.
Now I'm trying to Low Level Format it hope this is what casuing the errors.

Please help! this is my 1st time using a Huge HD.. Any guide lines or tips?

Thanks a Lot!

80GB? Sheesh..some of us got money.....

Well, I would definitly email Abit and check for compatibility (maxtor too...I'm sure they have a compatibility/incomaptibility chart).

What if you re-format it in two 40gb partitions....still have problems?

Your biggest problem is going to be that your bios probably does not support that size drive. Get a bios upgrade for the board that supports that drive. If you are using W2K, set the drive up in NTFS. I would also recommend that you only do a fresh install of 2000. If you have to call Maxtor Tech Support, immediatly ask for a senior tech. I was visiting their center last week and a lot of their good techs have left, if you get a senior tech by the name of Anita, tell her that you do NOT want to speak with her and you want a real senior tech.:D She is worthless and should have been fired months ago.

Hi,
I serached both sites, maxtor and abit. no note on compatability reports at all.
I've kinda sorted out that problem I had by doing a Low Level Format (sigh... I FORGOT THIS STEP EVERYTIME!)

Now I can copy files to it w/o problems. HOWEVER, new problems had arised : (
Now I get Freeze when I copy files from my SCSI to the Maxtor... especially when I'm doing something else like downloading at full speed (1.5Mbps) to a SCSI HD Or sometime after I've copied some files to/from it. Also I got my 1st Coaster with my plextor while burning a CD (files is in the Maxtor) again while downloading at full speed.
I'm supecting that it's an IRQ conflict with the UDMA66 controller and my SBLive card. So I might just give up on the UDMA66 and go back to UDMA33. Before I got the Maxtor I placed a IBM UDMA33 drive on that UDMA66 controller, no problems at all.. no hang/freeze. I might due to the UDMA66 using more memory or IRQ resource when a UDMA66 drive is attached to it, but I just can't draw conclusion to that since I'm no clue how those things works.

Any help? someone have this combo working? BP6 UDMA66 + 80Gb Maxtor?

I'll try calling Maxtor Tech Support tomorrow if I don't have any luck tonight

Thanks!
