When dividing, you can shift the decimal places of both numbers the same way and still arrive at the same value.

the long division you mean? i don't think that can get any simpler without resorting to calculators. so you'll just have to read up on it

anyway it's conventional to make the divisor whole by moving the decimal to the right and moving the decimal of the number being divided by the same number of places (adding 0 if necessary)

like what jman said:

your 5000 becomes 5,000,000 because your .125 becomes 125. Its a lot easier to divide whole nos.

5000
------
0.125

Multiply the numerator and denominator by 100 (multiplying top and bottom by the same coefficient results in the same number) so that the denominator becomes whole.

5000/.125 = 5000*8 = 5,000,000/125 = 1,000,000/25 = 200,000/5 = 40,000

is that about it?

5000/.125 =

Notice that .125 is the same as 1/8

5000/(1/8) = 5000*8 = 40000.

Doesnt get simpler than that :p
