Ok I've messed around with some of th earlier versions of red hat, but I've been trying to get Mandrake 7.1 up and running. I'm my 4th re install and on the last install I made it all the way through the installation process, did the reboot and it popped up with the gnome hint screen, telling me to click the foot in the lower left corner. Well....I can't see anything other than a few words in the center of the screen, the resolution is at 600*800 and I can't find a way to change it other than re installing and choosing a different resolution when installing my monitor and video card. I made the mistake of choosing 1024*whatever and the screen ask me to test, I chose to test and it looked completely pixelated, no images just splatter. I figured I had chose a setting outside the capabilities of the default driver, sooo I did the reinstall and lower it again, but the same splatter appeared. Now I've chose the lowest resolution, the splatter goes away, but the screen doesn't fit on the monitor, thus I can not navigate out of the gname hint window upon opening Linux. Here are my system specs
P3 600E ( set to 600 for this install usuallly runs at 800/840)
Asus P3V4x
Geforce 2 GTS
256 Megs Pc133
Adaptec 2940UW
Seagate Barracuda 9.1
Sb!Live
3Com Nic
Plextor 40 8/20 combo
Ok upon booting into linux my hard drives and cd roms are detected ok, but my machine keeps searching through ide a ideb idec ided idee, etc. echoing that nothing is detected. How can I config Linux to skip this portion of the boot, it makes booting annoying.
I plan on installing win2k and doing a dual boot. I tried to install win2k and use the partionmagic boot disc (made from the linux cd) to make a partion in the free space (6 gigs free) but when it got to 53% it hung and blew up my win2k partion, so I did a reformat and manually made 2 2 gig partitions and one 5 gig partion. So do I need to install windows on c: first and than do linux on d:? Or does linux really need to go on first since it applies the grub/lilo prog to allow the dual boot?
Sorry if these questions are basic issues, but I am NOT a linux guru. I wanna learn linux, I have a pretty good grasp on the Unix environment. Anyway, if any of you great minds could shed some light on this for me I would be very appreciative. Thanks!!
