Need help with Linksys WRT54G and cable modem/router...PLEASE!

Ok, I will try and make this simple.

I have a Linksys Cable Modem (BEFCMU10).
I have a Linksys Router/Vonage Phone (RT31P2)

Today, I got the WRT54G so I can play the xBox which is located downstairs through the router, which is upstairs.

Now, I want the internet connection to go into the WRT54G instead of the RT31P2, but then things stop working! I'm ashamed to say I have a Computing Science degree and just don't have the time to play about with this right now.

What do I need to plug in where and what's the best settings (once I get the third party firmware from Sveasoft) for the Vonage VOIP?

Sorry to be so vague...hope someone can help me 🙂

Thanks,

Paul.

If everything works already just the way you like it, then you don't really have to switch one router for the other. Just connect one of the LAN ports on the existing router to a LAN port on the wireless router (not the Internet/WAN port). At this point, the wireless router can just be a switch and still broadcast the wireless signal. If the RT31P2 is assigning IP's for you, the WRT54G will just pass it and any other services you have running. The first time you use it, you should connect with a cable to it and configure it as needed. From the router's config, you can turn off DHCP, enable WEP and turn of SSID broadcast(among other security-related options). Hope this helps.

I believe vonage has a version of the 54g router which has 2 built in voice ports, you can probably grab it at bestbuy/circuit city

Linksys has a way of creating the strangest errors when you don't use their stuff in the one specific way you should. You're probably looking at some sort of conflict with the routers and might want to try just using a WAP instead.

Thanks for your help guys.

I did finally get a couple of minutes to sit down and look at everything and I figured out what I was doing wrong... I connected a cable from the port of the WRT54G to a port on the RT31P2 instead of connecting it to the internet connection! Oh well, I'm stupid. Anyhow, it all works great now... now for tinkering with all those other settings 🙂

edit: roofles...I looked into the WRT54GP2 (the vonage version) and wasn't sure if the firmware could be updated to the level of the plain WRT54G. It also worked out cheaper to buy both the WRT54G and RT31P2 seperately! With all three linksys modules stacked up, they look pretty sweet too 🙂 (they don't give off that much heat for it to be a problem).
