This is really weird but I have just setup a Linksys wireless router (Wireless B) and am getting weird messages that I'm not connected to the internet, though I am (I'm connected right now and it says I'm not, lol). I only have one computer on the connection so far.

It also says that my network is not encrypted or secured, although I set it to be encrypted during the setup.

Can anyone tell me why it's saying I'm not connected (even though I am) and also how I can password protect my network? The setup software for the Linksys wireless router and the wireless network card were not very helpful or informative.

Thanks!

If you set it up to be encrypted then it is encrypted. Your connection is showing up as non encrypted because you don't have the encrypted info entered most likely.

Yeah, if you're connecting to an unsecure network and you're positive you set your WAP to be secure, then chances are you might be connected to someone else's WAP!

Reconfigure your WAP and/or wireless card...sounds like you might have something goofy.

What's weird is that when I configure it to use the WAP, it immediately loses the connection. As far as security, it says the firewall is enabled to keep others out of my computers but it doesn't say anything about keeping them from tapping into my network. I noticed in the search that it's picking up about 5 networks from people around me. All are secure but mine and one other one. It's really strange. Maybe I shouldn't worry about this?

Thanks for the help so far!

don't worry about 5 networks from people around you that is how your wireless b detected but not connect to any 5 networks unless you want to join any one of them but it is like unwelcome to them.
If you have problem with WAP losing connection you might want to upgrade latest firmware.

I set it to use a passphrase but it's still not letting me make it a closed network. Maybe I do need to update the firmware on the router? It seems that whenever I try to use WEP, I get disconnected. When I go back into the network connection properties, it has unselected WEP and gone back to an open network. Again, I'm sure I'm somewhat protected by the firewall but I dont' think I'm protected against people around me using my bandwidth. Since I'm in an apartment complex, there are definitely many people within range of my wireless router.

I tried to set it up to be protected with WEP and it worked, but then when I tried to login using the key I set on the router's configuration, it wouldn't work. It said that the key had to be "hexadecimal" or something like that. Why did it not let me use the password I gave it in the settings?

The manuals are located here under "More Information": http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=35&prid=544

Maybe the answer is there? I tried reading through it all but wasn't sure what a lot of it was talking about.

Try entering the first key "KEY 1" that is generated by the passphrase you use for your WEP encryption into the Windows dialogue box for password confirmation.
