Need help with internet connection

I have a friend that has a computer installed with windows xp. All of a sudden his internet connection got real slow. Then it stopped working altogether. He brought his computer over to my house for me to check it out. I have windows xp on two computers. Both are hooked up to the internet via dsl. He had comcast cable. I unplugged one of my computers from the router and hooked his up to it. There still is no internet connection. I tried to delete the local area connection in the network connection screen but it will not let me do that. What could be the possible causes/solutions of this problem. I know my setup works so it has to be his computer. Thanks for your time!!!

Are you/him running ICS? Internet Gateway? ANything in particular built into windows xp?

If so then deleting is not an option. You have to manually assign ip addresses, and re-assign them.

Could you give me a little more information? Sorry. I put him on my router and I can see his computer on the network. I can even share files with it. It just will not get on the internet. I did a virus scan with AVG and it found the dialer virus whatever that is. I put it in the virus vault but still no change. Maybe he just needs to reinstall windows?

An internet connection via cable modem should be easier to work with than via DSL modem & router. Try uninstalling in Device Manager the NIC, reboot, re-install the NIC. No IP addresses need be entered, it is automatically configured (on Comcast). Also make sure he's got an anti-virus program installed and updated.
