I have a 3com 3CP2976 OEM 56k PCI Modem.Fresh install of Win98 SE
I can't get windows to recognize it,I tried the new drivers off there website & the ones off the floppy that came with it(Same).

Tried New hardware wizard,no luck it.Whenever I use the setup from the driver disk I get a error & I have to close it. Moved it to other PCI slots no luck.

I've run into problems before with other US Robotics PCI modems,is there a special way to set these up?

I'm about ready to tell the owner of the comp his modem is dead but I really think it's more of a driver problem since I've seen this before with US Robotics winmodems(since it's PCI I assume it's a Winmodem)It was working before his system went down.

All he gave me was a floppy disk driver should there be a Cd install disk?

Thanks,Toro

being OEM, it will just be a floppy with drivers on it. does it show up in the device manager at all? With mine, after I installed the drivers it would show up with a big yellow question mark on top of it. All I did was remove the modem(simple comm device as my comp likes to call it) from the device manager and reboot. Upon reboot, windows found it and installed the drivers for it without any problems.

Hope this helps!!

Did you disable COM2 in the BIOS?
Internal modems love to install (PNP) on COM2.....

Ok, I had the same problem last time. I don't quiet remember how I solved this but try this latest driver first. Then I assume you use Winzip to extract the files. When you extract it, don't let it install it but instead when there is a "click next to prepare to install", click on the Winzip classic on the bottom left. You should see all the files like turbovcd and etc. Select all and drag them to the desktop. Then go to control panel --> system --> device manager. You should see CD Rom, Disk Drives and etc. I am guessing, there should be a yellow question icon on the list. Double click on that then click on the Driver tab and then click on update driver. Follow the instruction and when it asks for a driver, go to the desktop where you move all the files from the winzip to the desktop. Windows should be able to see the .inf file. Choose that and wait for the installation. Maybe you need to restart after that. Try that and see if it's gonna solve it. If not, PM me and I will try other way to solve it.

This post may not be of much help because I can't give specifics but anyway... I once had a modem that windows refused to recognize as new hardware. I called the tech support line and they had me edit the registry to remove the old modem. I just can't remember exactly where it was in the registry that I found that information. Once I had done it though, I rebooted and Windows identified the new hardware.
