Need help with home network.

I've done this before but this time I can't figure it out. I have my desktop
running Win XP Pro, File and Print Sharing enabled, sharing a folder,
permissions set, ip address of computer oked in Norton Internet Security's
trusted zone. My laptop is running Win 2000 with all of these settings set
similarly, and neither computer can see the other.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I really need to share the
printer.

Ok, are these hooked up with a switch/router or a crossover cable?

Same workgroup name (just makes things easier).

Hooked up through a Linksys hub. Workgroup name is the same on both.

If you have them in the same workgroup, they should be able to see each other regardless of shares/permissions. Make sure TCP/IP is installed on both machines and try pinging one machine from the other to see if it's a DNS problem or a hardware problem. Goto a command prompt and type
ping 127.0.0.1
and it should send and recieve 4 packets from itself. Do this at both computers, this tells you if the TCP/IP stack is functioning properly. If this works, then ping each machine from the other (ping <ipaddress> like ping 192.168.0.1). If this works and they still can't see each other than you have a DNS problem. Make sure that you don't have either plugged into the "Uplink" port on your hub too.

Thanks for replying. When I ping my desktop 127.0.0.1 it sends and receives all 4 packets. On my notebook it doesn't receive any.
I have tried reinstalling TCP/IP. Any other suggestions?

I have similar problem pinging 127.0.0.1 on both computers is fine. But pinging their respective IPs doesn't work. I have connected them using a patch cable (crosswired).

Neither of them seem to be communicating yet both connections appear active and leds of both network cards appear green.
