Need help with First Overclock...... ever

OK heres the deal. I want to get into overclocking and I want to practice on my current system. I've mainly been a laptop gamer (Dell 8600 P-M 1.6 ATI 9600 (128mb) 7200rpm hitachi) And I want to move upt to the desktop in particualr BF2. THis christmas I'm going to get some new hardware (you'll laugh when you see my video card. believe me) but I want to practice overclocking on my current system so ill sorta know what im doing when I get my new components.

Specs: (its an Emachines)
AMD Athlon XP 3000+ (running at 2164.8mhz/1.664volts/FSB=166.5/BUS speed=333mhz
512mb RAM (Samsung DDR PC2700/ frequency 166.5mhz)
MS-6734 motherboard
80gb WD Hard Drive
40g WD Hard Drive
MGE Vigor 400w Power Supply

AND THE BEST PART!
ATI Radeon 9000 series (64mb) Video card -it's a killer

3D mark 03 ran at 1158

I know obviously the video card is pathetic and im prolly gonna get a 6800gs for AGP during christmas.

Main question what utility do i need to try and overclock my CPU and whats a good (easily understandable for a complete nob) guide to follow?
Q2
What speeds can I expect from a 3000+ XP?
Q3
If i were to get a 6800 gs and an extra gig of ram vould I play BF2 fairly well?

CPU at idle is running at 53.5c is taht a little to high? (stock emachines case stock heatsink fac and one case fan (side panel is off)

"Practicing" with your current system is worthless because a) your motherboard probably can't overclock that well (or if you have an Unlocked CPU, the bios probably doesnt have multiplier controls) b) Overclocking an A64 is significantly different (though P4s are similar enough, I guess) and c) your cooling is probably anemic, to say the least.
